Latest on the Panthers, Rangers, Oilers, Red Wings and Sharks.
SUNSENTINEL.COM: Harvey Fialkov reports the praise Panthers GM Dale Tallon has for pending UFA center Marty Reasoner indicates to Fialkov Tallon could re-sign Reasoner. With Bryan McCabe and Cory Stillman now gone that make Stephen Weiss a prime candidate to take over the captaincy.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That might also indicate Weiss won’t be moved, especially as Tallon now has ten more draft picks heading into this year’s entry draft.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Jesse Spector reports the Rangers, having acquired Bryan McCabe, will now turn their focus to Dallas Stars center Brad Richards, as GM Glen Sather is determined to land Richards but on his own terms, not surrendering key pieces of the team’s core. The Rangers would need to free up cap space to take on Richards though that might be done via trade, as defenseman Matt Gilroy could be part of the package shipped to Dallas plus they could also gain cap relief by moving Alex Frolov to LTIR. Spector however warns a Richards trade isn’t a certainty as the Stars remain buyers, not sellers, and remain in the Western Conference playoff race, plus the ownership situation may be closer to being resolved, plus Richards remains sidelined due to concussion-like symptoms.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Expect Richards’ name to remain a fixture in the rumor mill until the deadline, but while it’s possible he might be dealt, as Spector observed it’s not a certainty, and it could be an expensive proposition to pry him out of Dallas.
SPORTSNET.CA: Mark Spector reports the Edmonton Oilers are insisting the LA Kings include prospect center Brayden Schenn if the Kings wish to land veteran winger Ales Hemsky, something Kings GM Dean Lombardi isn’t keen to do. It’s also believed Lombardi has turned his focus to Stars forward Brad Richards, but if he’s unsuccessful there he might call the Oilers again. The Washington Capitals are also believed interested in Hemsky or Dustin Penner but aren’t willing to part with a roster player.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers aren’t under significant pressure to move either guy so it’s up to teams like the Kings and Capitals to decide if they’re willing to pay the steep asking price.
DETROIT FREE PRESS: in a roundup of current Red Wings rumors reported Wings GM Ken Holland denied speaking with the Atlanta Thrashers. There’d been rumors Holland was interested in Thrashers defenseman Zach Bogosian. He also has no interest in St. Louis Blues goalie Ty Conklin, who was placed on waivers.
AOL FANHOUSE: Susan Slusser reports the Sharks could perhaps still use some depth on the blueline and in goal but given their recent improvement there’s little reason to believe GM Doug Wilson will make any significant moves by the deadline.
