Recaps of the Capitals-Jets and Blue Jackets-Flames games, plus the latest on P.K. Subban, Nazem Kadri, Alexander Edler and more.
COLUMBUS DISPATCH/CALGARY HERALD: Nick Foligno’s two goals snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 5-1 win over the Calgary Flames. The Blue Jackets are now in a tie with the San Jose Sharks for eighth overall in the Western Conference, but the Sharks hold two games in hand.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Flames,on the other hand, are now tied for last in the Conference with Colorado, remaining six points out of playoff contention.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: P.K. Subban was under the Montreal media microscope after he was benched briefly during the Canadiens 5-2 win over the NY Islanders on Thursday. Subban, who scored twice in the game, was moody during post-game interviews, but shook it off on Friday, claiming he enjoys playing for coach Michel Therrien.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s simply part of the maturity process for Subban, who is undeniably gifted but at times his cockiness hurt the Habs more than helped. This season, Subban’s dialed down the antics, focused on his play and is now tied for third in scoring among NHL defensemen this season.
THE GLOBE AND MAIL: James Mirtle wonders if Nazem Kadri is the Maple Leafs long-awaited answer at center.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Kadri is certainly making the case with his play, but I’d want to see how he does over a full 82-games before anointing him as their first line center. He’s still young, and this is a shortened season. If Kadri’s stellar play carries over into next season, he’ll put to rest the lingering doubts.
VANCOUVER SUN: The NHL has suspended Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler for two games for running Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith.
OTTAWA CITIZEN: The Senators hope to have defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Marc Methot in the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Re-signing Ladislav Smid is in the Oilers best interest.
