Recaps of Tuesday’s NHL games featuring Canadian teams, plus the latest on the Flames, Canadiens, and Senators.
WINNIPEG FREE PRESS/TORONTO STAR: Nik Antropov (3 points), Kyle Wellwood (3 assists) and Blake Wheeler (2 goals) led the way as the Winnipeg Jets thumped the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2, prompting happy Jets fans to serenade the Leafs with chants of “Let’s go, Blue Jays”.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gotta love Jets fans, they find creative ways to taunt opponents. Their best was chanting “Crosby’s better!” during Alexander Ovechkin’s first game in Winnipeg last season.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE/COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Mason Raymond’s spinarama shootout goal lifted the Vancouver Canucks to a 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, who protested Raymond didn’t maintain forward momentum on the spin move.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s not the first time a spinarama move in a shootout has been questioned, but I’ve yet to see those goals disallowed.
EDMONTON JOURNAL/DENVER POST: Devan Dubnyk shook off a neck injury suffered over the weekend to backstop the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Dubnyk made 36 saves for his first shutout of the season.
CALGARY HERALD: The Flames are trying to hunker down and ignore the rising time of trade rumors threatening to engulf them. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins have been scouting the Flames recent games.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Who do you suppose the Penguins and Bruins were watching in those games? Wouldn’t be a certain Flames captain, would it?
LA PRESSE: Rene Bourque (concussion) is back on skates for the first time since suffering a concussion in late-February. The Canadiens believe he’s on track in his recovery, but there’s no date set for his return.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Barring a setback, I’m guessing late-March/early-April.
OTTAWA SUN: Senators winger Milan Michalek continues to be hampered by a nagging knee injury which could require surgery in the near future. The Senators also added toughness yesterday, acquiring enforcer Matt Kassian from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a sixth round pick.
