Recaps of Sunday’s NHL games featuring American clubs, an update on Sidney Crosby’s injury status and more, none of which are April Fool’s jokes.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE/DETROIT NEWS: Brandon Saad and Dave Bolland each scored twice as the Chicago Blackhawks pounded the Detroit Red Wings 7-1. The Wings were playing without captain Henrik Zetterberg, who’s currently day-to-day with a groin injury.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Not the best present the Red Wings could’ve given legend Gordie Howe on his 85th birthday.
COLUMBUS DISPATCH/ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Mark Letestu scored in overtime and Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves as the Columbus Blue Jackets nipped the Anaheim Ducks 2-1. With the win, the Blue Jackets move into sole possession of eighth overall in the Western Conference.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hands up, everyone who saw that coming when this season began. Give it up to the Blue Jackets, folks. Many observers, including a number of their die-hard fans, assumed they’d be bottom feeders this season after trading away Rick Nash. Instead, they’ve got a realistic chance of clinching a playoff berth for only the second time in franchise history. Gotta love underdogs!
PHILLY.COM/WASHINGTON POST: The Washington Capitals blew a 4-2 lead in the second half of the third period and fell in overtime to the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4. The Flyers also lost forward Max Talbot to an undisclosed lower-body injury.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The win keeps the Flyers fading playoff hopes alive, while it’s a heartbreaking blow for the Capitals hopes of gaining ground in the Eastern standings.
PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: Penguins captain Sidney Crosby had surgery on Saturday for a broken jaw after being hit in the face by a Brooks Orpik slapshot in Saturday’s Penguins-NY Islanders game. Crosby’s jaw hasn’t been wired shut, but he’s on a liquid diet for now. The club has no timetable as to when he’ll return. The Penguins also announced defenseman Paul Martin underwent surgery Sunday for a broken bone in his left hand and is out four-six weeks.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That Crosby’s jaw wasn’t wired shut is a good sign, as that would’ve severely affected his food intake and fitness regimen. Still, it appears he could miss up to a month. Remains to be seen if GM Ray Shero will make any moves to replace Martin. There’s no trade he can make that replaces Crosby.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Rangers captain Ryan Callahan was quick to slap down a recent twitter comment by former teammate Sean Avery claiming the players hated head coach John Tortorella. In a statement, Callahan said, “He did not speak for us as a team when he was here and certainly does not now.”
DENVER POST: Colorado Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk has been sidelined by a shoulder injury.
