Games recaps featuring Jaromir Jagr, Ryan Callahan and Jiri Tlusty, the Blackhawks could rest some stars before the playoffs, and the latest on Steve Mason.
BOSTON GLOBE: Jaromir Jagr, Doug Hamilton and Brad Marchand each scored and Tuukka Rask made 28 saves as the Boston Bruins blanked the Florida Panthers 3-0. The win moves the Bruins into a tie with the Montreal Canadiens, giving the B’s first in the Northeast Division and second overall in the Eastern Conference as they hold a game in hand over the Habs.
LOS ANGELES TIMES: The LA Kings clinched fourth overall in the Western Conference downing the Dallas Stars 4-3 in overtime, while the Anaheim Ducks moved to the brink of clinching the Pacific Division crown with a 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Ryan Callahan scored twice as the NY Rangers eliminated the New Jersey Devils from post-season contention with a 4-1 victory. The win moves the Rangers into a tie with the Ottawa Senators, but the latter hold seventh overall as they have a game in hand over the Blueshirts.
COLUMBUS DISPATCH: The Columbus Blue Jackets widened their lead over the ninth overall Detroit Red Wings with a 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks. The Blue Jackets moved into a tie with the Minnesota Wild but the Wild retain seventh overall as they hold a game in hand over the Jackets.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Red Wings also hold two games in hand over eighth overall Blue Jackets, setting up what could be a thrilling finish in the race for the final playoff berths in the Western Conference.
TWINCITIES.COM: The Minnesota Wild’s 4-1 loss Sunday to the lowly Calgary Flames prevented them from maintaining a lead over the surging Blue Jackets.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Wild retain seventh overall, but face the threat of falling out of playoff contention. They cannot afford another letdown like the one against the Flames on Sunday.
NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Jiri Tlusty scored twice and Dan Ellis made 34 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes edged the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Tlusty’s breakthrough performance was a high point in what’s been an otherwise heartbreaking season for the Hurricanes, and at least gives them some promise for next season.
DENVER POST: The Colorado Avalanche downed the playoff-bound St. Louis Blues 5-3.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Blues haven’t clinched a playoff berth yet, but with a game in hand over the Blue Jackets, and sitting six points ahead of the ninth overall Red Wings, they only need one point to get in.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: The Blackhawks could rest some of their key players (Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa) this week in preparation for the playoffs.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Those players will obviously still want to play, but having clinched first overall in the Western Conference, there’s no need to risk injury to those players in meaningless games.
PHILLY.COM: Steve Mason has played very well in his short time with the Flyers.
