Game recaps, plus the latest on Brad Marchand, Anton Volchenkov, Ilya Bryzgalov, David Legwand, and much more.
BOSTON GLOBE/NORTHJERSEY.COM: Gregory Campbell scored twice and Jaromir Jagr had two assists as the Boston Bruins edged the New Jersey Devils in a game between two clubs going in different directions. The win vaulted the Bruins into the Northeast Division lead, one point up on the Montreal Canadiens, while the loss is the Devils eighth in a row, putting their season on thin ice. It was a costly win for the Bruins, as Brad Marchand left the game with a head injury, the result of an intentional elbow by Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov, who’ll likely face supplemental discipline.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Volchenkov has a 3-game suspension already on his resume, so don’t be surprised if he misses another 3-5 games for this hit on Marchand.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Mats Zuccarello netted the shootout winner as the NY Rangers nipped the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2. The win moves the Rangers into a tie with the seventh overall NY Islanders and two points up on the ninth overall Winnipeg Jets.
ARIZONA REPUBLIC: The Phoenix Coyotes kept their playoff hopes alive with a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. The win moves the Coyotes within one point of the eighth overall Detroit Red Wings.
DENVER POST: Two days after backup goalie J.S. Giguere ripped his Colorado Avalanche teammates for their poor play and only thinking about their season-ending trip to Las Vegas, he backstopped the Avs to a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Tough break for Grossmann, another in a series of injuries to befall the Flyers this season, and one reason they’re on the verge of missing the playoffs. As for whether or not Bryzgalov dozed off during a team meeting, to quote the goalie himself, “I really don’t care”.
PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: New Penguins Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow are adjusting to their new surroundings.
USA TODAY: Kevin Allen lists Marian Gaborik, Jaromir Jagr, and Jay Bouwmeester among several players traded in the days leading up to the trade deadline who have had a positive impact upon their new teams.
