Bruins defeat Sabres but lose Loui Eriksson to an ugly hit from John Scott, plus updates on Cory Schneider, Tim Thomas, Kimmo Timonen, Jakob Silfverberg, Viktor Stalberg, Jonas Brolin, Mike Kostka and Radek Martinek.
NOTE: Recap of the Ottawa Senators-Detroit Red Wings game will appear in Canadian Corner.
BOSTON HERALD: Milan Lucic and Torey Krug scored twice as the Bruins downed the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 in a game marred by a deliberate head shot by Sabres goon John Scott on Bruins winger Loui Eriksson.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That hit is exactly the kind the NHL wants out of the game. Scott will receive an in-person meeting with league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan, earning at least a five-game suspension. Eriksson stayed overnight in Buffalo for precautionary reasons. No word yet if he’ll miss future games.
NJ.COM: Long-time Devils starting goalie Martin Brodeur acknowledged Cory Schneider is the club’s starting goaltender. “I think he’s in the net now to stay,” Brodeur said. “I don’t see that’s going to change any time soon. I’ll be ready if it does. We have to try and win some games somehow.”
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Certainly didn’t take long for Schneider to take over from Brodeur this season, but it wasn’t surprising. Brodeur has looked like a shadow of his former great self early this season.
MIAMI HERALD: The Florida Panthers have placed goaltender Tim Thomas on injured reserve. He’s expected to miss at least the Panthers next two games. The Panthers have recalled Scott Clemmensen.
PHILLY.COM: Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen is upset with himself over his demotion to the club’s second power-play unit. He hopes to use the demotion as motivation to improve his play.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Perhaps it’s not lack of motivation on Timonen’s part hampering his play but rather the wear and tear of his long NHL career finally catching up with him.
LOS ANGELES TIMES: With four goals and three assists to open the season, winger Jakob Silfverberg has been an immediate hit with the Anaheim Ducks.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’m not surprised. Watching Silfverberg last season with the Senators it was obvious this kid had the makings of a scoring star. His wrist shot is the most lethal I’ve seen since Joe Sakic. If he learns to use it like Sakic, he’ll be a big star for the Ducks.
THE TENNESSEAN: Vikor Stalberg has struggled offensively so far for the Nashville Predators.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I must confess I’m surprised by Stalberg’s poor start so far with the Predators, expecting he’d have more of a positive impact on their offense. It’s a long season, however, so he has plenty of time to get his game on track.
TWINCITIES.COM: Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brolin has been sidelined indefinitely with a broken cheekbone. Further prognosis is expected today as to how long he could be out of the lineup.
NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Mike Kostka is out four-six weeks with a lower-body injury.
NEW YORK POST: The NY Islanders have signed defenseman Radek Martinek to a one-year deal worth a prorated $600K.
