The San Jose Sharks have traded defenseman Brad Stuart to the Colorado Avalanche for a second-round pick in 2016 and a sixth-round pick in 2017. The Buffalo Sabres have signed Brian Gionta to a three year deal worth $4.25 million annually
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Avalanche bring in an experienced defensive blueliner which they were lacking this past season. Stuart also has one season left on his contract so if he doesn’t pan out this deal didn’t cost the Avs too much.
Gionta is reunited with Josh Gorges, who was dealt to the Sabres. This deal helps them get closer to the cap floor and adds more leadership to the roster. One year too long for Gionta, who is 35 years old. While still an effective winger he’s fading as a scorer.
