A brewing "goalie controversy" in Montreal, and injuries could force the Devils to make some moves.

CBCSPORTS: Elliotte Friedman reports it's interesting to see the Montreal Canadiens giving backup goalie Jaroslav Halak more playing time over starter Carey Price. Friedman mused it could be to motivate Price although coming into this season his attitude wasn't seen as a problem. He writes it seems as though head coach Jacques Martin has been given the go-ahead by Habs GM Bob Gainey to see what Halak's got, leading Friedman to wonder if for the first time in two years it's possible Gainey no longer sees Price as the Habs' goaltending future.

CANOE SPORTS: Yvon Pedneault believes with Price struggling the Canadiens cannot afford to trade Jaroslav Halak.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Friedman also noted Gainey hadn't been shy in making changes to his goaltending tandem in recent years I don't believe he's lost faith in Price, but rather is allowing Martin to go with the hot hand, which belongs to Halak at the moment. It certainly won't hurt Price as it'll take some pressure off him, allow him to work with the coaching staff on improving his game, as well as motivating him to elevate his performance once he returns between the pipes. The Habs won't move either guy.

NJ.COM: Rich Chere reports the New Jersey Devils have lost forward Jay Pandolfo and defenseman Paul Martin for between four-six weeks to injuries. Losing Martin means the Devils will need to find another point man for the power-play. For now they've recalled defenseman Cory Murphy from the minors. Chere also reported over the weekend a trade was always possible.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Possible but unlikely at the present time. GM Lou Lamoriello will be patient and see how his club adjusts to losing Martin and Pandolfo.
