Is Carey Price on the verge of being traded? Could this be Tomas Kaberle's final season in Toronto? Are the Flyers interested in Brendan Shanahan? Are the Oilers talking trade with the Sabres?
CYBERPRESSE.CA: Francois Gagnon reports a Montreal radio station yesterday reported Canadiens goaltender Carey Price was being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Cristobal Huet. Gagnon dismissed the report calling it "false".SPECTOR'S NOTE: If Canadiens GM Bob Gainey even dreams of making that trade he should wake up and apologize! One of my readers tipped me to this "trade" yesterday but I didn't post it because I thought it was ridiculous. The only thing apparently related to Price and the Blackhawks is he's believed slated to get the start against them on Friday.
TORONTO STAR: Damien Cox reports Tomas Kaberle's future with the Maple Leafs is anything but certain, noting his recent improved play might help the Leafs win more games but could also bolster his trade value should GM Brian Burke decide to go shopping later in the season. Cox noted Kaberle's "no-trade" clause is back in effect but suggests it's not worth much now if Burke decides Kaberle should go.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Burke won't move Kaberle this early in the season but once the midway point is passed it's possible he could be put on the block, depending of course on the Leafs placement in the standings and Kaberle's performance. Kaberle however will have the final say on where he goes if management decides it's time to part ways, and that's going to limit the market.
PHILLY.COM: Sam Carchidi reports with Flyers forward Simon Gagne sidelined with two hernias and the offense struggling it's possible GM Paul Holmgren might look to make a deal. Holmgren said he's not interested in UFA winger Brendan Shanahan but Carchidi suggests if the offense keeps struggling that could change.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Trade options are few right now and the Flyers have limited cap space so any deal would have to make sense cap-wise as well as addressing their offensive needs. Apart from Shanahan there's also few options available in the UFA market.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson, responding to a reader's question, writes a rumored trade of Oilers defenseman Tom Gilbert to Buffalo for forward Drew Stafford has been out there for a year or so. Matheson reports the Sabres aren't interested in moving Stafford but could use an offensive defenseman.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: The Sabres could indeed use an experienced puck-moving blueliner but they're likely to wait until later in the season to address that need, if it remains a need. They'll also look for an affordable one and won't be keen to part with a player like Stafford to get one.
