Flyers GM Paul Holmgren speaks about Brendan Shanahan, the Flames could find retaining Rene Bourque an expensive proposition, and the reasoning for the Ducks signing Kyle Calder.

COURIERPOSTONLINE.COM: Chuck Gormley reports Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said he has no interest in signing veteran forward Brendan Shanahan as a short-term replacement for the sidelined Simon Gagne, adding he hopes Blair Betts and Ryan Parent will be healthy enough to return to the roster on Saturday. Holmgren didn't rule out acquiring a forward.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: The club also recalled Randy Jones from the minors and if he goes unclaimed his salary will be added to the Flyers cap, meaning there's no room to sign Shanahan if Holmgren wanted to, which evidently he doesn't.

OCREGISTER.COM: Chris Zupke reports the Anaheim Ducks signing forward Kyle Calder to a two-way contract might be a subtle message to the Ducks forwards that Calder might take one of their spots if they fail to improve. Zupke suggests the signing could mean change coming to the Ducks roster although he goes on to suggest the fact Calder was still available and the Ducks signed him "speaks to the severity" of Calder's and the Ducks' respective situations.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: One thing for certain is Calder is a depth signing, but as for the reasons behind it, as Zupke writes, discuss amongst yourselves.

CALGARY HERALD: Scott Cruickshank recently reported the strong play of forward Rene Bourque could make re-signing him an expensive proposition for the Calgary Flames, suggesting potential comparable players like Dustin Byfuglien, Nathan Horton, Dan Cleary, Ryan Clowe, Tuomo Ruutu, Dustin Brown, Brendan Morrow, Scott Hartnell and Ryan Malone, whose salaries fall in the range between $2.8 million - $4.5 million.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: The Flames currently have over $44 million committed to 15 players so management will try to keep his salary closer to the $3 million per season range. Bourque will be a UFA next July and if he keeps playing as well as he has so far he'll certainly be able to double or even triple his salary, if not from the Flames then from another team. I'm guessing the Flames however will find a way to retain him.
