Are the Red Wings interested in Peter Forsberg? Find out about this and other Forsberg-related news.

PHILLY.COM: Sam Carchidi reports Flyers GM Sam Carchidi downplayed reports he'd sent scout Ilkka Sinisalo to the Karjala Cup solely to scout former Flyer Peter Forsberg, who's attempting yet another comeback by suiting up for Sweden in the tournament. Holmgren claims Sinisalo was going to scout the tournament anyway and while suggesting if Forsberg were healthy and interested in returning to the NHL he might have interest Holmgren said right now they don't know if he's healthy. Carchidi feels Holmgren is merely keeping his options open like other GMs who might be interested in Forsberg but doubt the former NHL star will be back.

DETROIT NEWS: Chris McCosky yesterday reported on his blog Red Wings GM Ken Holland has no interest in Forsberg and won't be scouting him.

DENVER POST: Adrian Dater reports various news reports in Sweden and Slovakia claim KHL team AK Bars Kazan made a significant contract offer to Forsberg. Dater also noted Yahoo! Sports named the Flyers as the lead candidate to lure Forsberg back to the NHL, with the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche also showing interest.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Hat tip to GJ Berg for the Detroit News link. Forsberg's status was the only noteworthy thing in today's rumor mill. While I don't doubt a few teams will keep an eye on Forsberg to see how well he performs in the Karjala Cup I wouldn't make assumptions he's close to returning to the NHL at this time. Given his injury history as well as the limited cap space of most NHL teams at this stage in the season there will be few NHL teams who could afford to sign him who'd also be willing to do so.
