The latest on Peter Forsberg, Chris Chelios, Michael Peca and Jaromir Jagr.
TSN.CA: reports Peter Forsberg has told his NHL agent Don Baizley that he's yet to make a decision regarding his future following the Karjala Cup despite reportedly considering a multi-year offer from KHL team AK Bars Kazan worth several million dollars.
VANCOUVER SUN: Iain MacIntyre reports Canucks GM Mike Gillis confirmed his interest in Forsberg. The club has dispatched scouts to watch Forsberg at the Karjala Cup.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Those scouting Forsberg wish to determine if he can still play and is pain-free before approaching him about his future plans and if they include a return to the NHL. Because he hasn't played in any Swedish Elite League games since the NHL season began and the Karjala Cup is a tournament and not league play Forsberg wouldn't have to pass through waivers should an NHL team sign him.
RDS.CA: reports former NHL star Chris Chelios has been in talks with Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey. Chelios began his NHL career with the Canadiens back in the 1980s where he was a teammate of Gainey's.
USA TODAY: Kevin Allen reports Chelios strong performance with the AHL's Chicago Wolves is attracting the attention of several NHL general managers, leading Allen to suggest the veteran blueliner could be back in an NHL jersey at some point this season.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: As Allen pointed out Chelios isn't an impact player anymore but he could still be a valuable addition to teams seeking experienced depth and leadership on their blueline.
NEWSDAY: Steve Zipay reported on his Twitter account yesterday Edmonton Oilers assistant coach Tom Renney admitted former NHL star Jaromir Jagr remains on the Oilers radar.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: The Oilers made a generous offer to Jagr before he opted to sign with Avangard Omsk of the KHL of which he was very appreciative so it's possible once his contract is up with the KHL he could return to the NHL and possibly with the Oilers. Cap space both this year and next would be a problem and if Jagr were to return during this season he'd have to pass through waivers.
SPORTSNET.CA: Jim Kelley reports former NHL star Michael Peca continues to wait patiently for offers from NHL teams, adding Peca said he'd be a little choosy as he'd want to sign with a winning club. Peca is also aware that this might be the end of his NHL career.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: I daresay it is but one shouldn't totally rule out the possibility of a return later this season. I believe however if he doesn't get any offers this season that it will be the end of his NHL playing career.
