TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports the Colorado Avalanche have re-signed center Matt Duchene to a two-year contract extension worth an average cap hit of $3.5 million, paying him $3.25 million next season and $3.75 million in 2013-14. Duchene was slated to become a restricted free agent on July 1.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Affordable re-signing by the Avalanche, though curious it’s only for two years. Perhaps his injury woes this season factored into the length of the deal for a player some observers considered a future captain of the Avs.

And it will make him an RFA after the 2 yrs, not UFA, right?

  2. JJB says:

I’d say it was likely forced to be short term by the agent feeling that in two years Duchene will be worth maybe double that amount which the Aves weren’t prepared to pay now.

Good contract for the Avalanche but in 2 years this guy might command top dollar.
