Giguere signs contract extension with Avalanche.

CapGeek.com reports goaltender J.S. Giguere has signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche. Giguere, 35, has one year remaining on his current two-year deal with the Avs worth $1.25 million per season. He played 32 games, with a 15-11-3 record, a 2.27 GAA and a .919 SP, with two shutouts.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Though it’s a bit surprising the Avs are signing Giguere to an extension when he hasn’t completed his current deal, it’s obvious they think highly of his presence, both as a backup and mentor for starter Semyon Varlamov, and as an experienced voice in the dressing room.

  1. Those are some pretty good #’s for a back up as well! Anyway, really good way to nip those Thomas to Aves rumors lol

  2. Something isn’t smelling right in the whole Thomas taking a year off from Boston thing. I believe that there has been a big rift between him and someone high up in the team’s management system (Neely?) and he is taking it out on the Bruins for whatever has happened.

  3. whatever Thomas achieved for the Bruins on the ice his bizarre off ice behavior has become a distraction to the team and it’s time for him to go.
$1.5 million for a capable mentor/backup is a decent price and Colorado won’t have to worry about the position for the next couple of years.
