Babchuk Close to Re-signing with Flames.

Agent Jay Grossman, who represents defenseman Anton Babchuk, writes on Twitter the defenseman is nearing completion on a two-year contract with the Calgary Flames.

Spector’s Note: I’ll have more analysis once the deal is complete. The Flames needed to add another veteran defenseman after shipping out Robyn Regehr to Buffalo during the entry draft weekend. It’ll be interesting to see how much the Flames pay him.

**UPDATE** The salary is $2.5 million per season, pushing the Flames to over $60.4 million invested in 21 players. He struggled in his early weeks with the Flames after joining them in an early season trade with Carolina, but by the time the season finished, Babchuk was one of their better blueliners, with 27 points and a plus-minus of +18 in 65 games. He’ll likely see considerable work as a top-four d-man in Calgary over the next couple of years.

  1. meaningless fodder

  2. And yet you felt compelled to not only read it, but comment on it. Meaningless fodder, indeed…

  3. 2.5 Million for a 35+ defensemen is not bad at all. There is still a lot of work to do in the Feaster camp this offseason. This guy could be 40-50 points from the blueline if given the right opportunity/partner. Going to be interested to see what the 3 pairings are going to be this season.

Still a lot of dead weight on the team, it’s going to be interesting how Jay Feaster handles it. Everyone still hates on the Flames across Canada; so it’s funny when they make good moves like this and people still call it “fodder” or bad move. *cough* Leaf fans look what you have Tim Connolly *cough*.

  4. Who’s the moron who doesn’t know that Babchuk is super good?
He obviously wanted to stay there, cause he’s a much better version of Ian White and must’ve had offers.
