SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Blackhawks were in need of a second-line center. At this stage in his career, Richards could fill that role, though there will be some concern over his speed, which declined noticeably by the Stanley Cup Final. He’s still a good playmaker and should boost the Blackhawks power play.

It’s a very affordable move for the ‘Hawks. If it doesn’t pan out they’re not on the hook beyond 2014-15.  With this move, however, the Blackhawks are over the cap ceiling by over $2.2 million, so they’ll have to dump some salary before October.

  1. wow surprised richards went for that little.

  2. desperation move by a team with no Cap room, with the money that Toews & Kane have asked for it’s obvious the party is over in Chicago so Bowman is trying for one last run. it’s obvious that the ‘Hawks are going to have to choose between Kane & Toews or the depth that allowed them to be so competitive. if the Hawks were smart they’d deal Kane to the Sabres (being that he’s from Buffalo and they’re a team that’s soon to be on the rise) for a draft pick, sign Toews and try to build around him otherwise it’ll be a death of 1000 cuts with their team ending up an empty shell of what they were and no Cap room to do anything about it.
