Various sources report the Columbus Blue Jackets have extended winger B.J. Umberger to a five-year, $23 million contract, commencing in 2012-13. Umberger was eligible for UFA status next summer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: His average salary will be $4.6 million per season, nearly $1 million per season above his  $3.75 million salary for this season. The deal is slightly front-loaded, as he’ll earned $5 million in 2012-13, then $4.5 million in each of the final four seasons of the deal. This shows the faith Umberger has placed in Blue Jackets management, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this summer’s acquisitions of Jeff Carter and James Wisniewski might’ve played a part in his decision to stay.
