Blue Jackets Fire Arniel as Head Coach.

Blue Jackets fire Arniel.

Various sources report the Columbus Blue Jackets have relieved Scott Arniel of the duties of head coach, and promoted assistant coach Todd Richards as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Not to be cruel, but this should’ve happened weeks ago. Arniel’s fate was likely sealed after his disastrous press conference last week, when he embarrassed himself by not knowing his team’s stats in four-on-four situations, prompting him to angrily cut short the conference and storm out. The last straw was the club’s 7-4 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday. It’ll be interesting to see how the Blue Jackets perform for Richards, who spent two seasons as head coach of the Minnesota Wild.

  1. This has been a long time coming for the Jackets. I don’t understand why they chose to wait so long and I don’t get these teams giving their assistant coaches Interim positions. Seriously if your the Jackets there are much better coaching options out there right now and I wouldn’t be waiting, I’d be looking for the best guy for the job NOW before they get lost to other teams.

  2. I am guessing Howson is on a short lease too. I doubt he was allowed to do anything other than put in an interim Coach by ownership. They are probably just trying to get throught the trade dealine period, and if things have stayed the same, then Howson goes bye bye.

  3. Columbus will be cleaning out their office staff from the prez on down once the season is done. Right now it is just do what you can to make it through the year and we’ll go from there. Firing Arniel is just a way to appease the fans for the rest of the season until they can clean house and evaluate who to bring in this offseason.

  4. JJB – I do agree with what you have said, however the easiest option would be to promote from within. And let’s face it, if you look at this team, it doesn’t scream of the same time and planning that other more consistently successful teams have. Everything they have done as of late has been a quick fix or a SMA (Save my can) decision. Further, my best guess is that they are either hoping this new arrangement works out in shaking up the team or they are waiting for the candidate they prefer to be come more available.
