The St. Louis Blues have re-signed center Patrik Berglund to a three-year. $11.1 million contract extension.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That breaks down to an annual cap hit of $3.7 million.  Berglund was slated to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights. He earned $3.25 million on a one-year deal this past season.

Berglund struggled this season after moving from center to wing, with only 32 points in 78 games. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jeremy Rutherford suggests the timing could mean Berglund could be used in a trade. Rival clubs might have more interest in him if he’s under contract. We’ll find out soon enough if he’ll be staying in St. Louis.

  1. A lot of people say Berglund was to be part of an offer for Jason Spezza, the Senators could have said they needed him under contract.

Patrick Berglund, 21st Overall, and Jani Hakanpaa could be a good start for discussions about Spezza, but I’d say falls just short of the button.

  2. Interesting, I kind of thought it would take them out of the Spezza running because it seemed like they were keeping him? You make a good point. If the sens are trading with them, I don’t want that package though lol
