The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Blues have agreed to a four-year, $17 million contract extension with defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The new deal is worth $4.25 million per season, a considerable raise over the $1.3 million per season (base salary plus bonuses) he made in his entry-level contract. He’s earned it, improving each season since joining the Blues midway through his rookie season in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche which the latter probably still regrets.

An excellent puck-moving blueliner, Shattenkirk had 23 points in 48 games last season, putting him on pace to match his career-high 43 points of 2011-12. Only 24, Shattenkirk’s best seasons are still ahead of him, and he should remain a vital part of the Blues defense corps and offensive attack.

Shattenkirk’s signing comes one day after the Blues re-signed Patrik Berglund to a one-year extension, leaving only winger Chris Stewart and defenseman Alex Pietrangelo remaining of their key RFAs to re-sign.
