Bruins Re-sign Shawn Thornton.

Thornton re-ups for two more years with Bruins.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported via Twitter the Boston Bruins have re-signed forward Shawn Thornton to a two-year contract extension worth $1.1 million per season. Thornton is coming off a two-year, $812 K per season contract and was eligible for UFA status this season. Probably would’ve gotten a big more on the open market but obviously wants to remain a Bruin. Can’t say I blame him. In 69 games this season, Thornton has 12 points and 143 PIMs. Yes, he’s an enforcer, but also a valuable checking line “energy” forward, who brings more to the game than just his pugilistic skills. This signings bumps the Bruins payroll for next season up to over $56.4 million invested in 16 players, with Chris Kelly, Gregory Campbell, Daniel Paille, Brian Rolston, Joe Corvo, Greg Zanon, Mike Mottau and Marty Turco as their remaining UFAs, and Tuukka Rask and Benoit Pouliot as their remaining RFAs.

  1. Thornton is the heart and soul of the Bruins and lives in Boston year round, thank you Chiarelli for resigning this guy. Included in that cap number is Marc Savard, who sad to say is still affected by post-concussion syndrome @ $4m. I don’t see Rolston, Corvo, Mottau or Turco sticking around next year. If Dougie Hamilton is ready, we may not need Zanon at $2m or more. Kelly may have played his way out of Boston’s price range with his strong year and the lack of FA centermen. Campbell may be in the same boat but would love to keep him, great energy, toughness and strong on the PK, all reasons why someone else may offer him more. Pouliot, hasn’t shown much, Caron could replace him and be a depth guy. Paille, great energy and PK but has hands of stone. Perhaps Sauve could take his spot. That leaves Tuukka, who if they put Savard on LTIR, could take his $4m spot on the salary cap. That’s pretty much a $59-60mil payroll with a full squad.
