The Flames add blueline depth by signing Scott Hannan, David Desharnais proves his critics wrong, and Jets merchandise continues to sell well.

CALGARY FLAMES.

CALGARY HERALD: Vicki Hall reports Flames GM Jay Feaster figures he’s made another dark horse signing in Scott Hannan than his predecessor did last summer in signing Alex Tanguay. Hannan signed a one-year, $1 million contract on Saturday with the Flames. Tanguay last summer also signed a bargain basement one-year deal, and had a “bounce-back” performance, earning a better, long-term extension with the Flames.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s obvious Hannan is a replacement for Robyn Regehr, who was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres at the June entry draft. It’s not as though Hannan had a horrible performance last season, but it’s evident this summer most NHL GMs felt he wouldn’t suit their needs. This move could turn into a potential steal for the Flames.

MONTREAL CANADIENS.

LE SOLEIL: recently reported Canadiens forward David Desharnais achieved his goal of landing a one-way contract with the Canadiens, acknowledging his critics didn’t expect him to make it at the NHL level, but he’s proven them wrong.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The 5-7, 177 lb Desharnais was a pleasant surprise for the Habs last season as an energy forward with decent offensive skills, who could from time to time fill in on the scoring lines. He should continue in that role this season, and it’ll be interesting to see how well he performs in a full NHL season.

WINNIPEG JETS.

WINNIPEG SUN: Ross Romaniuk recently reported Jets merchandise has not only sold well in Winnipeg and Manitoba but across Canada as well.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like those who didn’t like the Jets new logo are in a distinct minority.
