Ryan Kesler undergoes hip surgery, more chatter over the Jets new logo, a look at the Senators proposed heritage jersey, Leafs defenseman Matt Lashoff on what he does to stay focused on the game , and the Calgary Flames hire a new team president for their AHL affiliate.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS.

VANCOUVER SUN: Ian Walker reports Canucks center Ryan Kesler underwent hip labral surgery on July 25th, will need ten-twelve weeks to recover, and could miss the start of the upcoming season. Walker also noted this means the Canucks could start the season with two-thirds of their second line sidelined, as Mason Raymond is still recovering from a fractured vertebrae, while winger Mikael Samuelsson and defenseman Dan Hamhuis are also recovering from serious injuries. This could open up opportunities for young players like Cody Hodgson to step up.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Kesler and the Canucks had hoped surgery could be avoided but six weeks following the end of the playoffs there had been no improvement, which explains why he underwent the procedure when he did.

WINNIPEG JETS

WINNIPEG SUN: Greg Dicrese reports there’s some debate among Jets fans over the meaning of the “primary mark” on the Jets new logo.

“At last count, there are at least five schools of thought battling it out to define what the “mark” of the Jets means:

1. Pro-military.

2. Pro-peace.

3. Pro-serious.

4. Pro-fun.

5. The Great Curling Conspiracy.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: My theory? Too many folks have too much time on their hands this summer.

OTTAWA SENATORS.

OTTAWA SUN: reports the Senators new heritage uniform has been leaked and gone viral, resembling the “barber pole” style of the Ottawa ’67s.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Not bad.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS.

TORONTO STAR: Kevin McGran reports defenseman Matt Lashoff enjoys playing guitar, which helps calm him down and keeps him focused on the game. He released a collection of tunes via his website and iTunes, but is also focusing on making the Maple Leafs as a regular this season, though he’ll have his job cut out for him with the club’s additions of John-Michael Liles and Cody Franson.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If the hockey career doesn’t pan out, perhaps he has a future in music.

CALGARY FLAMES.

CALGARY SUN: reports the Flames have hired Ryan Walter as head coach team presidentof their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford, BC. (thanks for the correction, “Jim Shorts”.)

Ryan Walter was named team President of the Abbotsford Heat. Troy Ward was named new head coach around a month ago.

Count me as one who was disappointed that the Winnipeg franchise caved to nostalgia and greed when the chose to name their franchise. Instead of seizing an opportunity to do something new they chose to sleaze it out with a retread name they knew they could sell. Oh well. I like the new logo. At least they did that well.

The Senators? What heritage? How long have the been in the league? I mean this time and, it’s a joke, even though they own the rights to that OTHER team (am I right?) there is no real connection. Any fan who buys into this merchandising opportunism is nuts and deserves to be gouged. Send me one of those sweaters too, while you are at it.

Shaun, sometimes its not about the history of the the franchise, sure the Sens have only been in the league since 92-93 but also about the original Ottawa Senators that were founded in the late 19th century, so this jersey isnt just about celebrating the current Ottawa Senators, its celebrating the history of hockey in Ottawa
