Canadiens acquisition of Tomas Kaberle a puzzling one, Roberto Luongo not troubled by Canucks “two-goalie” system, Leafs GM Brian Burke not expecting any difficulties with his team’s new ownership, Lee Stempniak may be close to offensive outburst with Flames, Colton Teubert gets another chance to impress with Oilers, Matt Carkner’s tough road, and the Jets improvement since the start of the season.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Pat Hickey believes the Canadiens acquisition yesterday of overpaid, underachieving defenseman Tomas Kaberle from Carolina doesn’t make sense on several fronts.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hickey’s not the only one who feels this way, and unless Kaberle can turn his game around this season with the Canadiens, this acquisition could be cited as a reason for GM Pierre Gauthier to lose his job this summer.

VANCOUVER SUN: Roberto Luongo claims to have no problem with backup Cory Schneider getting more starts as the Canucks employ a “two-goalie” system.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Whether or not you like Luongo, you’ve got to admire how he’s handled this situation. He genuinely gets along well with Schneider, and hasn’t made any waves over losing playing time.

TORONTO SUN: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke doesn’t anticipate any difficulties with his team’s new owners.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some in the Toronto media who don’t like Burke’s overall treatment of the press seem to be hoping the new ownership will force the Leafs to be more media-friendly, but that could be an exercise in wishful thinking. I suspect the new owners could take a “hands-off” approach, allowing Burke to continue running the show his way.

Stempniak rediscovering his scoring touch.

CALGARY HERALD: Flames winger Lee Stempniak, known for his streaky play, appears poised for another of his scoring stretches.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Flames offense, among the lowest-producing in the league this season, could use all the help it can get, including from a streaky Stempniak.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: The latest suspension for Andy Sutton will provide Oilers rookie Colton Teubert another opportunity to prove himself at the NHL level.

OTTAWA SUN: It’s been a long road back to action for Senators enforcer Matt Carkner, plus it’s been a year since he knocked out Derek Boogaard, which was the last game Boogaard would play prior to his untimely death earlier this year.

WINNIPEG SUN: Paul Friesen examines the improvement of the Jets since the start of the season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: In my opinion, there’s two key factors for this improvement: adjustment to their new city, and to their new coaching staff.

If Wilson keeps losing games because his defence last approach to coaching has created the worst penalty kill and 3rd worst goals against in the League then maybe Burke does have something to worry about from new ownership.

Wishful thinking is right. I’m thinking more of the lines of what kind of coverage will we expect to see? Both Bell and Rogers are media companies that make money selling ad space. Not only that but what kind of reporting will we get in the future and how much more Leafs coverage there will be? In two years the CBC’s HNIC contract will expire with the Leafs… I doubt that both SN and TSN (one owned by Bell the other by Rogers) will want to lose those Saturday night games to a rival unless it makes $ense. It will be interesting times coming up.

Wonder if Bell has to sell its share of the Habs? Isn’t there a rule about owning two teams?

    @A. Donnybrook

They don’t have to sell their shares. One, they don’t have majority ownership and are not directly involved in the day to day operations of the Leafs or the habs.

The new ownership in Toronto doesn’t take over until the summer. The sale has to be approved first.

  6. Joey says:

I believe that Burke will continue to do what he is doing BUT should the Leafs miss the playoffs again with Wilson at the helm, there might come a tap on Burke’s shoulder requiring a good answer as to why Wilson should receive a contract extension.

  7. Joey says:

I guess Kaberle is supposed to fill in for Markov who seems to have a permanent spot on the injury reserve list. I don’t know
