Canadian Corner – December 6, 2011.

Scolding Brian Burke for his role in the Maple Leafs spat with the local press…Milan Michalek’s scoring outburst…Oilers Ryan Whitney struggles to regain his form…Canucks Chris Higgins sidelined by foot infection…Chris Campoli could return soon to Habs blueline…Ron Hainsey doesn’t enjoy blocking shots…Flames call up Leyland Irving.

TORONTO SUN: Steve Simmons scolds Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke for contributing to the club’s poisonous relationship with the local media.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I doubt Burke listens to anything Steve Simmons has to say. Everyone knew when he came to Toronto he had a reputation for feuding with the media. As long as the Leafs are winning, fans could care less about the Leafs relationship with the local press.

Milan Michalek among league's leading goal-scorers.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Wayne Scanlon looks at the surprising offensive performance this season of Senators forward Milan Michalek, who’s among the league’s goal-scoring leaders.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It remains to be seen how long Michalek can maintain this pace, but he has a pleasant surprise in a season of many for the rebuilding Senators, and if he can stay healthy, could be a significant contributing factor in the team’s ongoing improvement.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney taking it one game at a time as he tries to round back into form after recovering from injury.

VANCOUVER SUN: Canucks forward Chris Higgins has been sidelined by a suspected staph infection in one of his feet.

LE JOURNAL DE MONTREAL: Defenseman Chris Campoli has been cleared for contact and could be returning soon to the Canadiens. Campoli’s been sidelined since the Habs season-opener to a hamstring injury.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s good news for a Canadiens blueline still struggling to cope with the absence of Andrei Markov and its lack of production on the power-play.

WINNIPEG SUN: Jets defenseman Ron Hainsey continues to be hampered by a nagging foot injury as a result of blocking a shot in a recent game. Hainsey understands the need to block shots but isn’t a fan of the practice.

CALGARY SUN: A knee injury to Flames backup Henrik Karlsson could once again give Leland Irving another shot to prove himself at the NHL level.

  1. “could care less”?

    Tsk.

  2. Good on Brian Burke for putting the Toronto media in there place. Toronto easily has the worst hockey media in the league with goofs like Steve Simmons, Damian Cox, Dave Feschuk, Howard Berger etc. Simmons’ article is yet another attempt by the TO media to make themselves the story. They all love to dish out criticism and try to create controversy out of nothing but they can’t handle being criticized themselves.

  3. Sigh another link to a Simmons’ article, you know the jack ass that leaked Belak’s death before his family was informed and the guy that scolded Burke for not being in Toronto July first to sign Richards because he was off on a trip to Afganistan. Ya that’s a character guy I need to link/read. Lyle you are unfortunately doing your part in helping cancers like him exist in the world. Can’t you link to anyone other than the terrible three – cox, berger and simmonds? Mirtle and Siegel are very good at what they do and deserve the page views over these three you commonly link to. I know you need the traffic too and these three can sure generate a lot with their negative views but times are a changing and we readers demand more… and by more I mean much better reporting/writing than what any of these hacks have ever done.

  4. Maybe it’s just that idiot Steve Simmons that brings out the poison in Burke ? Good for Brian Burke, keep it up, should probably be nominated to become the next Prime Minister also. Go Leafs

  5. The readers’ comments below the Simmons column will tell you all you need to know about Simmons’ credibility with hockey fans in Toronto. I hope Simmons reads them and takes away the message they convey, namely, most hockey fans in Toronto have no respect for his opinions about The LEafs, Burke, Wilson and the game of hockey itself. All I can say is, it’s a good thing The Sun doesn’t rely on ad sales to Simmons fans for its survival.

  6. Simmons is a little puke excuse of a sports reporter who thinks he is bigger than the game or the fans.
His articles are stupid and borderline gossip.
I would say he should write for eklund, but even his crap is too much for hockey buzz.
T.O. fans should boycott the sun to get rid of him.
Need proof?-donnybrook’s comments pretty much take care of that.
I bet he had one chest hair, and it’s permed!!!!!

  7. Man the TOR press has some nerve.
And since I saw Cox mentioned, let’s reiterate the hate: Cox, you’re not a fan. You should be a financial, or travel, or food critic.

  8. Maybe the press is jealous that the team is the focus now, instead of the journalists

  9. Simmonds is an immature joke. Just watch on tsn (every time I see him on I think.. Why is the greatest network in Canada wasting valuable air time with this loser?) when the other people are talking he has this smirk on his face that those immature grade 8 students have because they can’t get a grasp on real life situations and laugh hysterically when someone says a swear word. Simmonds is a prototypical loser who survives off creating gossip and reporting nonimpactful info.
