In today’s compilation of the latest NHL Canadian team news: Canadiens lose Campoli to possible concussion…A number of key Leafs on the sidelines…Alexander Edler’s questionable attempted hit on Oilers Taylor Hall…Senators face a season of ups and downs…Oilers could confound the experts…Flames get a lengthy break…Derek Meech hopes to stick with the Jets.

RDS.CA: Currently there’s no information on the status of Montreal Canadiens defenseman Chris Campoli, who was knocked out of last night’s Canadiens-Tampa Bay Lightning preseason game by a head shot from Lightning forward Ryan Malone.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Campoli will be fortunate to escape without a concussion. As for Malone, he’d best prepare to miss the start of the season for that hit.

TORONTO SUN: Injuries will have some impact upon the Maple Leafs opening night lineup, as Tim Connolly, Tyler Bozak and Nazem Kadri are currently sidelined. Winger Clarke MacArthur will also miss the start of the season owing to a two-game suspension.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Leafs are reportedly shopping around for a top six forward but it remains to be seen if they’ll address this need before the season starts.

Could Alexander Edler be facing a suspension?

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler’s near-miss elbow to the head of Oilers forward Taylor Hall could land the blueliner in hot water with league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Intent will have to be established, and as the story noted, Edler wasn’t even looking and Hall admitted to putting himself in a vulnerable position on the play. Check out the video here and judge for yourself. Edler was penalized on the play, but it appears Edler was simply lining up Hall’s upper body on the play, and Hall’s body was lower than Edler expected. Still, it could result in a suspension if the league believes Edler targeted Hall’s head.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Wayne Scanlan reports the rebuilding Senators could face a season of “ups and downs”.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s a rebuilding year, and while it’s possible the Senators might squeak into the playoffs, I think their fans should keep their expectations for this season realistic. This will be a good opportunity for the younger players to show what they’ve got.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples believes league prognosticators are setting their expectations too low for several of the Oilers young stars this season.

CALGARY SUN: The Flames are in the midst of an 8-day layoff between the final preseason game and the start of the regular season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Perhaps the additional time off will help those nursing injuries, including team captain Jarome Iginla and winger Rene Bourque.

WINNIPEG SUN: Local boy Derek Meech is hoping to crack the Jets roster after having spent the past several years with the Detroit Red Wings farm team.

Edler will get 3 games and Malone will be looking at 5 games.Malone will get more, mostly for getting a 5 minute major and a game misconduct.

  2. Icebear says:

Malone deserves 5 games, at least. Edler, is a tricky one, because it didn’t look like edler was trying to take off halls head, but rather it just happened to be the principle point of contact.

Yeah, Hall came at him head first. I still expect a suspension.
The Sturm hit has me wondering though.
“Wayne Scanlan reports the rebuilding Senators could face a season of “ups and downs”” – I wouldn’t count on too many ups. But their young guys look good and will probably have some great shifts.

Campoli was on the Habs’ flight to Toronto today. That’s a good sign!
