The Montreal Canadiens have traded center Daniel Briere to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for winger P.A. Parenteau and their fifth-round pick in 2015 .

Canadiens trade Daniel Briere to Avalanche for P.A. Parenteau.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Can’t understand why the Avalanche would make this deal. While Briere did have a good playoff with the Canadiens, he was reduced to fourth-line duty because, quite frankly, at 36 Briere’s no longer a top-six forward.

Parenteau no longer fit into the Avs system plus he was limited by injuries to 55 games, but at 31 he’s still a productive player. He managed 43 points in 48 games during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign and 67 points in 80 games two years ago with the Islanders.

Canadiens GM Marc Bergervin is facing criticism over his recent handling of Josh Gorges (more on that later in the rumors section) but this trade should help redeem him in the eyes of Habs fans. This one’s a win for the Habs.

There are a few reasons I can see the Avs doing this deal… 1) Parenteau had clearly worn out his welcome with the team. For whatever reason his name have been mentioned in trade rumors pretty well since they signed him. Not sure the reason for this but they were going to move him one way or another 2) While their cap hit is identical, Briere is only a 1 year investment while Parenteau still has another left. They must have felt Parenteau was overpaid and wasn’t worth the 2 year investment 3) Briere brings a veteran presence to a young up and coming team. He is a Stanley Cup winner and has loads of playoff experience which could prove valuable on a team such as Colorado. He can likely take on a bigger leadership role with this team.

Uh when did Briere win a cup? Great playoff performer especially for Buffalo but no cup. I think this makes sense for the AVS like someone else stated two less years on the deal with Briere. They should have asked for Gorges he is a good d-man and avs need that bad.

briere never won a cup?? if so when and what team?

  5. Jason W says:

Lyle, they are doing this for one reason only. Caproom. Or why would Colorado give PA that easily

  6. William says:

Roy wasn’t a big fan of PA. It was clear as the season went on with healthy scratches and reduced ice time(excepting injury time). The salaries are comparable, so it’s not a salary dump situation. I think the Avs got a good leader for the young core and a potential third/fourth line center in the event Stastny departs. can’t say they needed to throw in the draft pick though.

Good trade for the Habs…at least on the surface anyways
