Canucks Acquire Roy from Stars.

The Dallas Stars have traded center Derek Roy to the Vancouver Canucks for a second round pick and prospect Kevin Connauton

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Turns out Canucks GM Mike Gillis didn’t need to shop Roberto Luongo for a second line center after all. Roy, 29, is eligible for UFA status this summer and has 18 points in 29 games with the Stars. He should address their second line needs in the short-term, and if he pans out, could be an affordable re-signing in the off-season. He’s coming off a six-year, $24-million contract, but given the decline in his performance in recent years, he’s not going to get that kind of money again. After dropping their last two games, it’s apparent GM Joe Nieuwendyk is continuing the rebuild. He’s also shopping Jaromir Jagr, so stay tuned on that front

  1. Roy found his stint in Dallas very short as he continued to decline in performance from his tenure in Buffalo. Vancouver sees Roy as a depth center, likely playing him on their third line.

It appears Buffalo won the trade when forward Steve Ott and defenseman Adam Pardy were acquired for Roy last summer.

  2. Rumors say Roy was asking Dallas for 5 mil per so that was the end of that. He won’t be getting that from the Nucks. So is he going to be one of the coveted UFA’s this year?

    • There is no way he was asking for more than he is making now. My guess is if he does well Vancouver will re-sign him for a similar contract as Chris Higgins. 2.5-3mil for 3-4years. Perfect for the third line and capable of filling in on the second or special teams when needed. His point totals have been on the decline but he’s been playing a good checking game.

      • According to the reports from Dallas media, you’re far wrong. The Stars were offering 4-5 years at $4M, while Roy was asking for a longer deal in the $6M range.

  3. I’ve poured through many legit falls media reports a d can find nothing to suggest that he was asking that much money or what dallas was offering for that matter. I found a fan blog suggesting Dallas overpay for him for around that money just to show other players they are willing to try and keep some galant on the team do you have any links to support the supposed asking price?

    • Dallas, not ‘falls’ dumbphone autocorrect…
