The Washington Capitals have traded winger Martin Erat and John Mitchell to the Phoenix Coyotes for defenseman Rostislav Klesla and center Chris Brown.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Surprise, surprise, Capitals GM George McPhee found a team willing to take last season’s trade deadline mistake off his hands. Actually, this move sees two clubs swapping players they no longer wanted.
The Caps have tried to dump Erat since last November, when he made a trade request after struggling mightily in Washington. The Coyotes will hope he can regain his play-making skills with them. Klesla spend most of the season with the Coyotes farm team. He could fill the role of shutdown defenseman the Capitals have sought throughout this season. His contract expires after this season.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Capitals picked up any of the salary on Erat’s remaining year.
