  1. Lots of big names and talent on that list for Seattle to consider. I’m not surprised seeing a lot of UFA’s on that list. It would be a great gamble by Seattle to “waste” a pick for a UFA that may not want to play for a start-up. However, I’m surprised to see the choices some teams made by exposing one vs. the other choice. Especially in goal. Sure, Price comes with a high price tag but, he’s still an elite goalie as we saw in the playoffs.

    • Hi Jorgen

Francis won’t “waste” a pick on a UFA

As at now he can negotiate , AND sign , any one of those unprotected UFAs (limited to only 1 per team).

If he signs them… that counts as his pick from that team

However… he will have been able to negotiate with the ones he wants… and if a few deals are close; he’ll not pick them in the Exp draft; get a teammate of theirs; then can (on 28/7) slightly up the last offer he made… and sign them as a UFA then… basically getting two from that team

He could also come to a “firm” verbal agreed upon contract; take a team-mate; then actually sign the “handshake deal on 28/7… what I believe he should do with Driedger

      • @ Pengy…Well we lose Mccann and may lose Tanev. I am surprised they protected Blueger over Tanev.

Why did they both protecting Matheson ? They should have only protected two defenseman Letang and Dumoulin.

If Seattle does take Tanev we will have $ 7 million in cap space to go after a Marron, Coleman or some other gritty player.

I am not sure why the Penguins aren’t going after Arizona’s Connor Garland.

He is young, fiesty, affordable coming off two 40 point seasons in a row. He scored 22 goals in 2018-2019 this kid is Tanev with hands..

Find out what Arizona wants for him…geez

  2. Penguins Protective List

    Forwards – Crosby , Malkin , Guentzel , Rust , Kapanen , Blueger , Carter

    Defensemen – Letang , Dumoulin , Matheson

    Goalie – Jarry

Penguins protect four centers , like it !!!!

Penguins didn’t protect Tanev. If Seattle selects Tanev , losing Tanev won’t be a huge lost & the Penguins can use Tanev’s cap hit 3.5 million & MvCann’s 2.94 cap hit towards another direction.

    • @ Speed kills..
I agree with you they will have over $ 7 million in cap space if Seattle takes Tanev. We had to protect Carter with Malkin’s injury and unavailability to start the season. There are some good grinders out there players like Coleman, Marron and others.

What I don’t understand is why we protected Matheson? He did play well but that contract is well not great and we would still have Dumo, Kris , and Marino to build around.

I would rather lose Blueger because I love Tanev’s energy and feistiness.

      • Hi BnG

Hextall should have protected McC instead of losing him for nothing

He could have exposed Blueger; and if taken… Gaudreau in for Blueger

Matheson protected is very strange… what are the odds that Francis would take his contract? Extremely slim

I don’t think GMRF bites on Turbos contract

If not; to me the likely choices are

        Friedman, Pettersson, DeSmith

My gut feeling… he balks on Pettersson term; and selects Friedman

Friedman as an RHD and young; would be great to keep

If Pettersson goes… space freed up

No matter what…. Pens got Jack for McC; but I’m also a Leafs fan…. So bug gain for nothing out the door by Leafs

  3. Now can Sweeney make a side deal with Francis to select say Dillon from Washington for a trade package.

I say Seattle selects Lauzon from Boston.

    • Nah. How can they pass on that “can’t miss stud” Curtis Lazar?

      I kid … I kid

But I’m betting they take Mike Reilly.

    • George Mike Riley is a ufa, I think they can afford to wait until ufa season opens to go after him.

BTW if you can get over were Lazar was drafted he is a good player for a depth role. I’m good with him being a Bruin.

      • When you finally see he is a master at skating around furiously without actually accomplishing anything you’ll soon change your mind. As they did in Ottawa, Calgary and Buffalo.

      • Well George, he was fine in the playoffs for Boston. So no complaints here.

  4. Why wouldn’t Francis select Alex Ovechkin? Instant marquee player if they can get him signed, Is he that “attached” to the D.C. area?

    • George O,

I thought the same thing right at first. However, Ovechkin is a UFA and the selection wouldn’t mean anything unless Francis could sign him away from the Capitals which is highly unlikely.

      • I wonder Matt. Ovechkin, being a Russian, has no close ties to D.C. and he likes playing to an adoring audience. He’d shine in that Division. And if you look at the rest of the available Capitals, that’s a pretty ho-hum list – outside of Ovechkin.

    • Hi George

He won’t “select” Ovi , but I fully expect him to call Ovi’s agent and negotiate

If they come to an agreement and Ovi signs (unlikely) then Ovi is a Krakken and that counts as Kraken selection from Caps…. And Caps can’t do anything about it

I don’t think Ovi signs with Krakken though

  5. Seattle should take Price.
A tandem of Price and Driedger would make them competitive right out of the gate

    • Yeah Flamesfan…depending on which Price shows up !

    • Reading an article yesterday about if Seattle basically takes who they are projected to take they will be at $59.5 or $ 60 milion…well under the $81.5 cap ceiling.

Do you think they go after a Gabriel Landescog or a Tarasenko?

  6. Most teams went 7-3-1; I think three went 4-4-1…. The shocker was Predz going 3-5-1…. Wow

I was a bit surprised with BrisBoise going 4-4-1

He has to clear tons of space and TJ needs to be one of them… I thought he might negotiate a side deal with Francis…. McD and a prospect to take TJ (technically with McDs NTC; the deal would have to have been structured as selecting McD and taking in trade TJ plus a prospect)…. That would have cleared nigh $12 M in Cap space ; Raddysh in for TJ (some production loss but not huge) and likely Suter at a 3rd of the Cap hit; to replace McD

Now , unless BrisBoise can swing a huge side deal… it’s likely Gorde or Killorn that Francis snaps up; and Bolts still strapped to TJ; and still needing Cap room

    • Peggy Tampa Bay is going to have to clear at least $12 million in cap space so it’s likely three big names are out of here. The only way around that is if either McDonagh or Stamkos is somehow moved.

I think JBB went for an IV because with the playoff McDonagh had, The chances were better the Francis would take him despite his contract. He would make a great first captain to which no one could disagree. Also by protecting him and exposing Killorn, Palat and Gourde, opens the possibility that the two GM’s do have some kind of a deal for Seattle to take Johnson. Finally by not exposing McDonagh, That doesn’t mean JBB won’t trade them for assets and possibly try to sign Suter at a low number.

Anyway you slice it it’s a speculative mess in Tampa Bay

    • Pengy Tampa Bay is going to have to clear at least $12 million in cap space so it’s likely three big names are out of here. The only way around that is if either McDonagh or Stamkos is somehow moved. That might reduce the number to 2

I think JBB went for 8 skaters because with the playoff McDonagh had, The chances were better that Francis would take him despite his contract. He would make a great first captain to which no one could disagree. Also by protecting him and exposing Killorn, Palat and Gourde, opens the possibility that the two GM’s do have some kind of a deal for Seattle to take Johnson. 7. Lyle

What are the restrictions re selections by Kraken and how long they have to keep the player

In the back of my (nimble) mind I was thinking that selections had to be kept for the full 21/22 season

    Is that true?

However; anybody Krakken signs 28/7 onward as aUFA , should be able to be flipped at any time…. If so … Francis and his whole team should be going gangbusters on negotiations and contract feelers over the next few days…. They can then sign at will 28/7 and have assets that they can move at TDL

    • Pengy, I may be wrong but I think that rule about a selected player remaining with the selecting team for a full year applies only to trades back to the team from which he was selected. He can be dealt to any other team – but they’re bound by the same rule.

  8. Seattle isn’t going to select any ufa’s he also very well might negotiate with them and sign them when free agency starts. This way he can have two players from one team.

  9. I truly believe that recency bias makes fans overvalue their team and players or the reverse, heaps disappointment on them.

Price, if he’s drafted, that’s fine. He and his family go to the west coast, he becomes the face of the franchise and pulls a MAF.
If not, he stays a Hab with a wonderful platoon mate- the team gets a $10 million cap relief. win/win.

Shea Weber, love the guy but the team struggled through the past two seasons despite his leadership.

He has played well after long layoffs and taking a year of recovery would be fine and cap relief.

Gallagher was injured most of the year and Danault and Tatar both suffered as a result and will disappoint anybody who signs them for more than $4-4.5 million.

Seattle would love the veteran experience and ability to play anywhere in the lineup that Byron brings, hope they pass on him.

Drouin is the enigma, he can never do enough in Montreal and while I hope Seattle passes on him I think he’d thrive on the West Coast and be the player he was expected to be.

Bottom line is that this team limped into the playoffs without Weber, Price, Drouin, Danault, Tatar and I don’t want any side deals with the Kraken.

  10. If Seattle takes Price, who do you think Montreal’s next GM will be?

  11. Hey All!

So, the rule states that you’re not allowed to expose a player with a potential career ending injury, unless NHL approves. How was MTL able to expose Weber? His injury has been reported to be potentially career ending. I also read a report claiming that Price may need hip surgery and could miss all of next season – how are they able to expose those 2 and therefore protect 2 others? I know all medical records have to be submitted to Seattle but, before It gets to that point, specifically with Weber… I assume the NHL proved that it’s not career ending?

    From nhl.com:

    * Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a team’s player exposure requirements unless approval is received from the NHL. Such players also may be deemed exempt from selection.

    • Habs have exposed other dmen (Kulak for example) so they meet the necessary criteria. Concerning Price no injury is confirmed yet as he is only meeting the doctor on Friday so again criteria is met.

      • Hey,

Yes but the rules states that you can’t use a player who has a potentially career threatening injury to ‘satisfy a teams player exposure requirements’. It’s not about the team meeting the requirements as much as it is about the player being exposed to satisfy the requirements. Otherwise, teams would just expose injured players and some career threatening.
