The Phoenix Coyotes today announced the re-signing of forward Martin Hanzal to a five-year extension. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A significant move for this troubled franchise, getting a good young player like Hanzal to commit to a long-term deal despite the uncertainty over their future in Phoenix. Perhaps this can be taken as a sign there could be new ownership willing to keep the club in its current location?  Hanzal’s  new contract takes effect following this season.

**UPDATE** The deal is worth $15.5 million, or an average cap hit of $3.1 million per season.
