Devils Re-sign Adam Henrique.

The New Jersey Devils announced today the re-signing of forward Adam Henrique to a six-year deal reportedly worth $24 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That deal breaks down as an average cap hit of $4 million per season, well above the $854K per season of his entry-level contract.

Henrique dazzled in his rookie year, with 16 goals and 51 points, followed by 13 points in 23 games during the 2012 playoffs. He struggled in his sophomore season, however, with only 16 points in 42 games, though he was hampered by a broken thumb suffered while playing in the AHL during the lockout.

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello usually doesn’t invest in lengthy deals for players coming off entry-level contracts, but he obviously has enough confidence in Henrique to feel he’s worth it.

With the departures of Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk, Patrik Elias’ career winding down and  Martin Brodeur about to play his final season, the Devils will be looking toward young stars like Henrique to become franchise players.

One also wonders what effect Henrique’s new contract could have upon center Nazem Kadri’s negotiations with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The answer is not much. Not remotely compatible other than both coming off ELC.

    • unfortunately Kadri probably doesn’t share that view. Both had one exceptional year, while i do think they are both the real deal. Kadri will now be fishing for 4 mill at long term rather than 5.

But if he wants to play this year he might have to settle for much less and much shorter term.

  2. Kadri was never up for the Calder and never scored big goals in the playoffs. He isn’t as good a two way center and was kinda lousy on face offs. All thing yes he may one day do or big good at but that is why a 2 year deal is more likely for him.

  3. Also congrats to the henriques !! Great to see.
