The New Jersey Devils have re-signed forward Patrik Elias to a three-year, $16.5 million contract.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Color me unsurprised. Elias spent his entire NHL career with the Devils, and while there was some questions about the uncertainty of the club’s ownership affecting his negotiations, his re-signing shouldn’t come as a shock.
The average cap hit of $5.5 million per season seems a bit steep for a 37-year-old forward, but Elias has consistently remained among the Devils leading scorers. Indeed, his 36 points in 48 games led the Devils last season.
Elias is in the twilight of his career, but it appears he still has enough left in the tank for a couple of productive seasons. This could be his retirement contract, though if he’s still performing well three years from now, maybe not.
