Koivu returning to Ducks.

The Anaheim Ducks have announced they’ve re-signed center Saku Koivu to a one-year contract. Though their press released didn’t disclose the financial details, the Orange County Register reports it’s worth $3 million, which includes some bonuses, including games played. Koivu only had 38 points last season, but the Ducks still valued his two-way play, including his penalty-killing and faceoffs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Not much of a surprise here, as GM Bob Murray had indicated his preference to re-sign Koivu for another season. I believe their plan is to move him down to their third line and try to add a second line center this summer. Some will suggest this move was done to lure back Koivu’s friend and fellow Finn Teemu Selanne, but I don’t believe this has anything to do with Selanne and everything to do with ensuring they have a proven performer centering their third line.

I like it. Koviu’s points maybe declining as he gets older but I have to agree he is a solid two way presence, great on the PK, and a very strong leader. Nice re-sign by the Ducks!

Excellent move. I hope Selanne decides to play again, too.
