Flames, Avalanche Make Four-Player Swap.

The Calgary Sun’s Randy Sportak reports the Calgary Flames have dealt Alex Tanguay and Cory Sarich to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for David Jones and Shane O’Brien.

Alex Tanguay returning to Avalanche in four-player deal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE:  Big move by both clubs giving up players who no longer fit in their respective organizations. Tanguay returns to where his NHL career began and where he won his only Stanley Cup. He has three years remaining on his contract at $3.5 million per season. Sarich has one season remaining on his current contract worth $2 million.

Jones has three years at $4 million per left on his contract, while O’Brien has two more years at $2 million per on his.

What’s more notable, however, is the Avalanche are getting older with his move. Tanguay will turn 34 next season, while Sarich turns 35 in August, while Jones is 28 and O’Brien 29.  Overall, I think this deal could favor the Flames in the long run.

  1. hah not even sure why feaster signed sarich last year, only to sit as a healthy scratch for 95% of the season. he was also given a ntc. I guess with iggy gone, tanguay becomes pretty useless here as well. overall good player that I loved watching. with sakic and billington and roy in office, I guess they wanted a guy/friend like tanguay to mentor the young kids. I see cammalleri being dealt pretty soon here as well. maybe cammy and a 4th liner for a 2nd/3rd round pick?

  2. Jones is pretty much a useless player in Colorado, even with the Avalanche having play making centers like Duchene, and Stastny. Last time i looked, Calgary doesn’t even have a good center at all

  3. FIRE SAKIC!!!

  4. Calgary does have 20 mill, could sign Lecavlier, more importantly Monahan is coming in (likely). I would love a huge Cammy involved trade that moves us into the top 3 to get Mackinnon or Drouin, but I wouldn’t bet on any of the three top teams giving up their pick
