Flames Hire Brian Burke as President of Hockey Operations.

The Calgary Flames today announced the hiring of former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke as their new president of hockey operations.

Flames hire Brian Burke.

Flames hire Brian Burke.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Let the speculation over how long Jay Feaster will remain as general manager begin.  Some analysis I’ve heard today about Burke’s hiring suggests Feaster “isn’t his man” for the long term.  Time will tell, but this is a significant hire by a Flames team commencing a major rebuild.

I’ve read some fans claiming this is a bad move by the Flames, but I disagree. Burke has a solid record rebuilding teams, with various degrees of success in Vancouver and Anaheim (including a Stanley Cup championship in 2007). While the Maple Leafs failed to make the playoffs during his tenure as GM, last year’s playoff roster was build by Burke.

Burke’s outspokenness tends to put some people off, but he claims he won’t be getting involved in the day-to-day management or being management’s spokesman.  Whether you love or hate Brian Burke, there’s no denying his solid record, which should make him a good addition for the rebuilding Flames.

  1. I’m no Burke fan, but having watched the press conference, I gotta say, I think I like this move. It sounds like he is committed to working WITH Jay, not OVER him. He seemed to express that he likes Jay, and I didn’t get the sense at all that Jay’s days were numbered. Burke seemed more to praise everything that Jay has been doing of late, going as far as to say that the Flames had the best draft this year of any team. That may be smoke being blown up media butts, but Burke’s never been one to make comments just to please people. I doubt he would say anything unless he felt it was the truth.

Anyway, like I said, I didn’t get the feeling Jay has to worry about his job. They seem to be approaching this as more like a partnership than a hierarchy.

  2. I am a Burke fan and I do love this move for Calgary. I do think Calgary had a pretty decent draft where they get burned seems to be trades. Just think Feaster will/should be on a short leash never been a fan of his. Anyway, glad to see Burke got another chance he did get screwed over in Toronto and that is his team making the playoffs now not Nonis. If not for his very public disdain for offer sheets I could see him being bold and pushing one for Kadri. Maybe trade is possible ala Kessel. Which doesn’t look as bad now.

    • How can it be bad? Burke won’t be burning them in the trades anymore.
