Flames ship Morrison to Blackhawks.

Morrison shipped to Blackhawks.

TSN reports the Calgary Flames tonight dealt center Brendan Morrison to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for minor league defenseman Brian Connelly.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Morrison has post-season experience, and while he’s probably not going to fill the second line center role, it would allow them to promote Dave Bolland if required into that role. The move also sheds a bit of cap space for the Flames, perhaps in anticipation of other moves toward the trade deadline.

  1. Good for both clubs. Morrison gets to go to a contender and the hawks get depth down the middle. Flames get a offensive minded dman who may or may not play nhl and clear salary out which is good if they plan to buy.

  2. I cannot believe this trade when it happened. When I first saw BMo’s name; I was like, well, at least Flames shed some cap and at least this class act will actually get some play time elsewhere. Then I noticed Connelly’s name on the other end… and was like… WOW.

The second highest scoring Dman in the AHL, 25 years old, undrafted (does this sound like someone else that’s playing a big role in Calgary currently?) for a 36 year old with of course no future in a Calgary uniform.

Both teams get the thumbs up in this trade, Hawks get deeper and of course Flames get another stellar Dman; that is probably ready to make the jump to the bigs very soon.

  3. Lyle, do you think perhaps the hawks test out morisson over the next few weeks, and if things don’t click they deal for more quality? Like a cheap risk that can save a big deal from becoming needed. And suter isn’t so much avoiding signing a new contract as he is avoiding the process and the distraction that goes with it.

  4. Jeb, it’s certainly possible, as they could then place him on waivers or demote him. That being said, I think the focus now seems to have shifted more to bringing in a second pairing defenseman
