PUCK DADDY/JAPERS’ RINK/BACKHAND SHELF: offer up their respective takes on the Washington Capitals today firing Bruce Boudreau as head coach and replacing him with former Capitals great Dale Hunter, while Capitals owner Ted Leonsis offers up his appreciation to Boudreau for all he’s done for the team, while acknowledging the difficulty of having to fire him.

PUCK DADDY/BACKHAND SHELF: also chime in on the Carolina Hurricanes axing Paul Maurice as their bench boss, replacing him with former Canadiens assistant coach Kirk Muller.

SWEET TEA, BARBECUE AND BODYCHECKS: My pal The Acid Queen is thrilled with this move by the Hurricanes, something she’s advocated for quite some time.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With two coaches axed today, someone made the suggestion Anaheim Ducks coach Randy Carlyle shouldn’t answer his phone today! Good advice.

THE HOCKEY WRITERS: Michael Finazzo believes the Predators current slump is tied to the inability of their “big three” – goalie Pekka Rinne and defenseman Shea Weber and Ryan Suter – to step up and provide the leadership required to overcome this situation.

  1. Mondays in December are the worst for coaches of under-performing teams. It’s not Dec. yet but damn close. Two different paths for these new coaches; Hunter nearly 700 games with a .691 winning percentage in the “O”, Muller 10-6-1 in his first season in the AHL.

    It would be nice if the teams burying contracts in the minors had to at least carry a percentage of the contract on their cap hit.

  2. Lyle- They will have to leave the GM’s some mechanism to deal with poor performing over paid players not living up to their contracts. Sure shame on the GM but what about the player. I don’t know the answer but I always felt the ownership will change the mgmt if they don’t like the direction of decision making of GM.
