In today’s collection of notable post from the NHL blogosphere: Criticizing those who criticize NHL disciplinary Brendan Shanahan…An alternative solution to the icing problem…A look at which Sabres stock is up or down…An agent lashes out at Shanahan…Where will realignment leave the Dallas Stars?…How should Sharks fans feel about Dany Heatley…Semyon Varlamov off to a good start with the Avalanche…NHL: The Movie!…Brendan Shanahan’s video message to NHL players.
BACKHAND SHELF: Daniel Wagner weighs both sides of the icing issue (including mine, thanks Daniel!) and suggests a hybrid system.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I stand by my call for “no-touch” icing, but Daniel’s suggestion does have merit. Ultimately, though, it’s up to the league to make the decision. Here’s hoping it won’t take a player being killed or crippled to force them to change it.
DIE BY THE BLADE: Zachary Zielonka offers up “Stock up/Stock down” for the first week of the Buffalo Sabres season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The only notable “stock down” is Tyler Ennis, who’s done nothing offensively in the Sabres first two games. Hopefully, that trend will improve.
SILVER SEVEN: Mark Parisi questions the sensibility of booing under-achieving veteran blueliner Sergei Gonchar, suggesting that jeering a player’s performance does nothing to force them to play better.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: True, but it does make the fans feel better when said player’s poor effort gets on their nerves.
DEFENDING BIG D: Brad Gardner believes when all is said and done regarding NHL divisional realignment for next season, the Dallas Stars will remain in the Pacific Division.
FEAR THE FIN: asks the question, “How should we feel about Dany Heatley?” now that he’s no longer with the Sharks.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Don’t feel anything. It’s not like he asked to leave San Jose, like he did with Ottawa and Atlanta, or spurned the Sharks as he did the Edmonton Oilers. He came, played two years, and now he’s gone. Hey, how about that Logan Couture?
RED LIGHT DISTRICT: Erika Schnure points out Semyon Varlamov is off to a good start with the Colorado Avalanche, posting two wins for his new team.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Varlamov can stay healthy, he’ll give the Avs a fighting chance to make the playoffs. He’s that good…when he’s healthy.
BATTLE OF CALIFORNIA: presents an R-rated (language) NHL: The Movie! with a cast of dozens starring as your favorite NHL team.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: My favorite is Kevin James as the Minnesota Wild.
VIEW FROM MY SEATS: Matt Reitz offers his take on agent Alan Walsh’s criticism of league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan for suspending his client, Minnesota Wild winger Pierre-Marc Bouchard, for two games.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It was only a matter of time until an agent did so. Now that Walsh has taken care of his client’s interests, and the league continues to support Shanahan, we can all move on.
HOCKEYBUZZ.COM: Shaune Vetter has one word for those who criticized former league disciplinarian Colin Campbell and now do the same to his successor: HYPOCRITES!
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Agreed, Shaune. Some folks just aren’t happy unless they’re bitching.
DOWN GOES BROWN: reveals Shanahan’s video message to NHL players. Who knew Shanny could rap like Eminem?
