Hockey Blog Beat – October 4, 2011.

In today’s assortment of deliciousness from the NHL blogosphere: A rebuttal against “Moneypuck”…A look at the Hurricanes preseason stats…Reaction to the NHL’s decision not to suspend Ryan Malone for his head shot on Habs defenseman Chris Campoli…Why the Predators demoted Ryan Ellis…Where does Cody Franson fit on the Leafs defense?…A look at the Avalanche defense… Mike Danton speaks out against a biography of his life…the KHL’s “top ten” hits…A humorous look at the Western Conference.

TOM BENJAMIN’S NHL BLOG: Tom takes on James Mirtle’s recent series on advanced statistical analysis in hockey.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I enjoyed Mirtle’s series, and am certainly intrigued by advanced statistical analysis, but Tom does make a good point that hockey statistics “will never do what we want them to do, which is to effectively evaluate individual hockey players.” He’s not against hockey analytics, but there is a danger of getting so deep into analysis that you miss the rest of the game.

CANES COUNTRY: Bob Wage examines the Carolina Hurricanes recent preseason, and hopes the club will improve when the regular season begins.

HABS EYES ON THE PRIZE: Kevin van Steendelaar noted Canadiens fans weren’t happy with the league’s decision not to suspend Ryan Malone for his recent hit on defenseman Chris Campoli, and noted the conspiracy theories have begun, one of which claims league disciplinarian Shanahan didn’t suspend Malone because one of his former teammates is Lightning GM Steve Yzerman.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’ve addressed this elsewhere, and no, I don’t buy into any conspiracy theory, but it was inevitable Shanahan would face some backlash over this.

SMASHVILLE 24/7: Ryan Porthat believes the Nashville Predators did the right thing by demoting Ryan Ellis to their farm team to start the season, believing he needs some more seasoning before he’s ready to join the big club.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Predators are one of the better teams in the league when it comes to developing talent. Better to ease Ellis into the bigs by having him get some minor league experience.

Unlucky 7?

PENSION PLAN PUPPETS: Steve Burtch examines the Leafs defense corps and suggests promising Cody Franson could start the season as their 7th defenseman.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: He won’t be in that role for long, especially if, as expected, GM Brian Burke trades a defenseman (not Franson!) for help at forward.

MILE HIGH HOCKEY: “andidee15″ takes an in-depth look at the blueline corps of the Colorado Avalanche.

DT.SE: Former NHL’er Mike Danton isn’t pleased about an unauthorized biography about his life hitting the bookstores, and is considering legal action.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hat tip to ‘Mats’ for the link. Not sure there’s much, if anything, Danton can do legally about this book.

BACKHAND SHELF: Justin Bourne presents “The KHL”s top ten hits of the week” and tries to keep a straight face.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No, really, those honestly were the KHL’s top ten hits of last week. Also, my congratulations to Justin on his new gig at The Score.

DOWN GOES BROWN: offers up a preview of the NHL Western Conference. As always, hilarity ensues!

  1. Curious to see how many suspensions Shanahan continues to hand out once the regular season begins. There appears to be some push back building from some teams, fans and media…
