The Carolina Hurricanes today announced they’ve relieved Paul Maurice of his duties as head coach, and will announce a replacement later today.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A rough day for coaches, as Maurice is the second to be fired this morning. It’s rumored former Canadiens assistant coach Kirk Muller could be Maurice’s replacement. We’ll find out later today.

**UPDATE:  The Raleigh News & Observer report Kirk Muller is to be named as Maurice’s replacement.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With their season sinking fast, the Hurricanes had to do something, and a coaching change was the most obvious. Muller garnered a good reputation as an assistant coach with the Habs, especially with his work with young players, but was passed over this summer for coaching jobs as the perception around the league was he needed experience as a head coach. It certainly didn’t take long for that perception to change, as far as the Hurricanes management is concerned. It’ll be interesting to see how well Muller does, and how the Hurricanes adjust to their new coach.

One Response to Hurricanes fire Maurice as Head Coach.

  1. Dabroons says:

Both Boots and Maurice took the fall for the blunders of their GMs over the summer. Kaberle has been washed up for quite a while, and Rutherford failed to provide sufficient top 6 talent for his team.

Meanwhile, most of McPhee’s summer moves have bombed as well. He traded the wrong goalie and Vokoun hasn’t played well. Hamrlik is as washed up as Kabs. Ovie has quit playing hockey at both ends of the rink. Bad move by the players to name their laziest team mate as captain. What did they expect to happen? Ovie is a cancer.
