Hurricanes re-sign Gleason.

Gleason remains a Hurricane.

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced the re-signing of defenseman Tim Gleason to a four-year contract extension. Gleason will earn $3.5 million in 2012-13, $4.5 million in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and $3.5 million in 2015-16.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No, I don’t believe this is a “sign-and-trade” by the Hurricanes. This move takes Gleason, considered the best defenseman thought available by the trade deadline, off the market. A surprising move, as it was thought the Hurricanes would deal him rather than risk losing him for nothing. Other Hurricanes blueliners likely to be shopped are Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek.

  1. Good move by the Hurricanes .. why not resign your franchise goalie’s “best friend” on the ice. Gleason protects Ward more so than anyone else on that roster. I’m sure Cam is very happy with the re-signing of Gleason.

  2. And the trade value for defensemen just went up…

  3. Spacek, Allen, Gill just became a lot more valuable. I still think Gill is one of the best additions a playoff team can add right now.

  4. Also as a note, could make any liner the Leafs shop more valuable and other teams more desperate … hoping for a Komi deal!

  5. If the leafs are hoping on making te playoffs I don’t think you move Komi, no matter what his cap hit is right now

  6. Having another dman off the market is great for teams like the Leafs and it should also raise the value of Hal Gill.

  7. As a Hurricanes fan, I was pretty shocked by this. Don’t misunderstand, I love Gleason and I hope he can find his game, but I had already accepted that he would be gone as part of any potential “fire sale”. At any rate, he’s a great team player and, as has already been commented on, this will definitely make the trade market for defensemen much more interesting.
