Latest Canucks, Canadiens and Oilers News – August 14, 2012.

The Canucks face questions regarding several players, P.K. Subban talks about his contract status, and the Oilers talk contract with Taylor Hall.

Burrows among several Canucks slated for UFA status next summer.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Roberto Luongo trade saga drags on, but the Canucks management must also start negotiating soon with Alex Burrows and Alexander Edler, who’ll both be eligible for UFA status next summer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: All these situations probably won’t be resolved until after a new CBA is implemented.

NHL.COM: Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban remains optimistic he’ll eventually sign a long-term contract extension. Subban noted he grew up a Habs fan, loves playing in Montreal and wants to play his entire career there.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some Canadiens fans, bloggers and even a few Montreal pundits have expressed some concern over Subban’s contract negotiations, fearing the Habs will trade him, or a team like the Flyers could swoop in with an expensive offer sheet. Folks, Subban isn’t going anywhere. He and the Habs will get a deal done. Sometimes these things take longer than expected.

TSN.CA: The Edmonton Oilers have resumed preliminary contract talks with Taylor Hall, who’ll become a restricted free agent next summer.

  1. Burrows is the key signing and barring Daniel Sedin the best winger they’ve got, he can move up and down the lineup and with a decent center get you 30 goals a year (even strength . his play in the Canucks Cup run was outstanding right from the outset, he scored the series winner against Chicago and got the first game winner in OT against Boston (beating Chara and Thomas respectively). should the Canucks fail to resign Burrows they’d be in tough to replace him and ultimately hang onto the Sedins who have only two years remaining on their deal. the person Gillis has to actively try to get rid of is Booth, he’s a one dimensional player making premium money for what’s been a subpar performance so far. in a perfect world anyone taking Luongo would have to take Booth as well.

  2. Always thrilled to see young talent want to stay in Montreal. Signing Subban, with Price (still think he’s over-rated) and Pacioretty is a good core to build on.

  3. @ gameon63
completely agree. I have no doubt that Burrows will get re-signed, maybe $4mil? Edler may be harder to keep within the pay scale set out for d-men on Van.
Agree that Booth is one dimensional, but I’m willing to give him one more season to prove his worth, (if anything just to keep his trade value up). He is fast and charges the net which opens the ice up for other players, Van. doesn’t have any players like him. He just needs a good playmaking center man. I thought he looked best playing with Hodgeson vs. Kesler. Maybe Schroader will work out with Booth and Kassian/Jenssen on his wings.

  4. I persist in saying that Subban’s contract is related to the Habs’ belief in the possibility of signing Doan. Once Doan’s fate is sealed (at least in Bergevin’s mind), PK will be signed.
