Latest Canucks, Senators and Jets News – August 3, 2012.

An update on Ryan Kesler’s return to the Canucks, Mark Messier wins arbitration case with Canucks, Senators still lacking depth in toughness, and Jets hire second assistant GM.

Kesler recuperating from shoulder & wrist surgeries.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Ryan Kesler’s agent said the Canucks center won’t be returning to the lineup until December following off-season shoulder and wrist injuries.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Those injuries explain both the decline in Kesler’s production last season, as well as the Canucks rumored pursuit of UFA center Jason Arnott.

VANCOUVER SUN: Former Canuck Mark Messier won a $6 million settlement in a long-standing contract grievance he had with the team.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Over a decade after his disappointing three-season tenure with the Canucks, Messier continues to haunt this team.

OTTAWA SUN: The Senators are still lacking depth in toughness, plus they also need to reach the cap floor before the start of this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A good chunk of that cap space will obviously be used to bring in another physical player or two.

WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets have promoted Larry Simmons to assistant general manager.

  1. The messier the Canucks saw was no leader and no legend. I saw him play on numerous occasions and he was a joke. My friend dealt with him on the pr level and he was an —hole. Thanks for the memories mark. Vancouver Canucks fan

  2. Messier haunts the Canucks??? During his time there he finished every year as one of the teams top 3 point producers. As far as the money owed to him, when Messier signed with the Canucks he was given 1% ownership of the team. When he signed with the Rangers he was forced to sell that back to the Canucks, who undervalued the stock despite selling the team to the Aquinos. The money is the value of the stock.

Whether or not he was good or bad for the Canucks is irrelevant, he is owed what he is owed.

  3. The Mike Keenan/ Mark Messier era was a dark one for the Canucks.

  4. Messier should be embarassed to ask for anything from the Canucks, he didn’t do anything to earn the salary he got. his statistics were abysmal despite having Bure, Mogilny, Gelinas, Naslund and Linden/Bertuzzi to pass the puck to. that he wasn’t able to rack up the points despite having a virtual murderer’s row of talent shows how much his skills had eroded.
