Latest Maple Leafs, Sharks & Red Wings Rumors – July 29, 2014

Updates on James Reimer and Daniel Alfredsson, plus the Sharks’ unwillingness to trade Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau this summer.

TORONTO STAR/TORONTO SUN: James Reimer re-signing with the Maple Leafs was a turn of events considering he bore the brunt of the blame for the club’s late-season collapse. He also requested management explore the possibility of a trade earlier this summer. The Star’s Kevin McGran suggested a limited trade market for goalies this summer was among the reasons why the Leafs opted to re-sign Reimer, while The Sun’s Lance Hornby considers Reimer’s $2.3 million annual salary is “a trade-friendly figure” should an opportunity arise to move the netminder later on.  Reimer also once again downplayed any perceived differences of opinion with coach Randy Carlyle over his late-season performance.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: My guess is the Leafs couldn’t find a decent deal this summer for Reimer. That’s nothing against his ability, just the way the market is this summer for goaltenders. His value could improve over the course of the season as some rival clubs seek an upgrade between the pipes.

Don't expect the Sharks to move Joe Thornton & Patrick Marleau this summer.

Don’t expect the Sharks to move Joe Thornton & Patrick Marleau this summer.

SI.COM: Allan Muir believes San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson was limited in what he could take on for salary this summer. Given their “clearly-stated desire to remain competitive”, Muir believes it was “fantasy” to believe Wilson would ship out Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau for the sort of “‘picks-and-prospects” return which would’ve laid the foundation for a rebuild. He also believes the best time for Wilson to make a significant move is later in the season (if he’s so inclined) closer to the trade deadline. Veteran Sharks might be more inclined to accept a move at that point, while rival clubs could be more inclined to part with some of their promising talent.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The fact the Sharks signed Thornton and Marleau earlier this year to three-year deals with full no-movement clauses also factored into why there weren’t any major moves this summer. As long as they’re unwilling to leave San Jose, there’s little Wilson can do about it.

MLIVE.COM: Brendan Savage reports Red Wings GM Ken Holland said no decision will be made on the status of Daniel Alfredsson until he begins skating a couple of weeks before their training camp opens on September 18.

  1. Remember when a player signed a contract and it meant they were staying for the foreseeable future? Now the ink isn’t dry on the contract before they are either being shopped or rumored to being shopped. Ahhhhh, I’m so glad the salary cap era has stopped the insanity of free agency.

  2. Well – the circus goes on. Reimer came out yesterday and said there are no issues between himself and Carlyle and basically downplayed the entire situation from last season, but how long before it crops up again? Can Reimer handle being the back-up? From what he’s said, he seems to be under the impression that he has a legitimate shot at being #1, but anyone who watched last year knows that Bernier is the more solid option and is who they plan on moving forward with. This Reimer situation should be dealt with as quickly as possible.

    • Call me old fashioned but Im willing to bet the guy who wins more will play more. Coaches who are on the hot seat like Randy is not going to rock the boat, he needs wins to keep his job, if Bernier struggles or lets a bead goal in Ithink he will be just as likely to get the hook this year as Reimer was last year. Reimeris going to get his chances, the rest is up to him, Iamsure he understands this.

    • Goalies have bad years as well. Don’t be so quick to write off Reimer. If he comes in and gets hot, they will ride him or trade him.
Leaf fans can only hope they have two hot goalies.

      • Reimer has situated himself nicely. All he has to do now is produce like he believes he can when given the opportunity. Either up his trade value in the hopes of a trade or serve out this contract and in two years move on. I see no rational reason why Reimer a professional athlete could possibly allow personal feelings towards his coach or others interfere with his future as a NHL goalie.

  3. Just an FYI on Leaf coaching.

I spoke to an assistant NHL coach on the weekend. He claims that Babcock will be coaching the Leafs next year and that its the worst kept secret in the league. He said it’s basically a done deal so expect it to happen.

I’m just repeating exactly what he told me. It’s been mentioned on this site a few times and some people have dismissed the rumour.

    • LOL, That sounds a little random / made up. If it was “the worst kept secret in the league” wouldn’t it have come out by now? I can’t believe for one second Detroit would not be screaming “tampering” in there was an ounce of truth to this story.

      • Well to be fair, tampering happens all the time in the league. There’s tons of closed-door off-the-record talks between players/coaches/GMs. There’s the written rules and then there’s the unwritten rules. Yes there are some lines you just can’t cross but “feeling” out players/coaches/GMs isn’t one of them – of course they will deny it from minute 1 because of the written rules. Just look at Brian Burke. Played the role of strongly saying he wants to be in Anaheim a long time and then all of a sudden he was let go by Anaheim just around the time Toronto needed a GM and snapped him up. And that’s on the heals of Toronto first hiring Burke’s favourite coach, Ron Wilson. Yeah… no discussions there.

All that being said, just don’t see Babcock coming to Toronto. Pick your reason.

    • Thank you anonymous internet entity with anonymous source!

    • Don’t think so, Babcock has been long rumored to want the University of Michigan coaching job when available

      • Let’s see, go to Toronto and become the highest paid coach in the NHL, or go back to school for a “real world” salary. Hmmmmmm….

        • It’s all about traveling less / better life style, it’s not always about Money

    • See there are a couple other reasons I have a tough time beliving this.

      1. A bigger worst kept secret is Shanny and Babcock dont see eye to eye, infact thry dont really like one another.

      2. (This is a long shot but…) The Leafs are dtill in the eadtern confrence right? What happens if by some weird twist of fate Randy gets thrm in to the playoffs and they win a round or 2? Do you reslly think they fire Ranfy after making the playoffs 2 out of his first 3 full years? I dont….counting chickens before they are hatched.

      • I’m just telling you guys what he said about Babcock. Take it for what you will.
        1. I asked him about that very same question. He said something to the effect that he respects him as a coach and isn’t stupid. I didn’t elaborate further on the subject. I guess I should have recorded it so I could type it word for word. lol

        2. I also asked him this question. He said barring an amazing season and playoff by Carlyle Babcock will be here.

As someone mentioned here it would be tampering if they had a signed deal so I assume when he said “done deal” he meant they have had verbal discussions in private in a hypothetical fashion and Babcock wouldn’t be opposed to coaching the Leafs for $5M per season. I’m sure this goes on all the time in the NHL where buddies of each party get involved so there is no real tampering or would be impossible to prove with no paper work.

I guess we will see how the season plays out and if the Leafs falter again whether Babcock is here next year.

Maybe Spec has heard more on the subject?

When he said it’s a done deal I assume he meant if Carlyle doesn’t have some incredible season and playoff, while

        • Sorry ignore that last line I typed it twice.

        • You know I heard the same thing at the end of last season.. And this summer, former Leaf executive Dave Poulin mentioned this at a family party I was attending. Although he also said that Babcock and Shanahan have a bit of bad blood, Lewekie really wants Babcock. I can totally see it happen, his contract ends at the end of the season. Leafs will probably still suck it up but it would be an upgrade behind the bench that might just push them into the playoffs! Carlyle sucks lol.

      • I think you are a little confused about “tampering”….It does not have to be a “done deal” in order to be hit with tampering. You can not negotiate, talk to, about, future what ifs, anything with a player or coach under contract with another team. You can’t even suggest it out loud. And if in REALITY….some assistant coach was going around telling random fans of these closed door meetings, I’m pretty sure the NHL/ Detroit would be looking into it.

    • Sorry, but Babcock is coming to Pittsburgh next year after another two series & done collapse by the Pens … combo GM & HC …

    • Was it one of the asiistants the Leafs fired? lol

      • It’s funny how numerous reporters have been sniffing around this very subject and have wrote articles about it. Makes you ponder why.

        • Because Toronto media has nothing better to do than to fabricate stories where there are no stories. Case in point…Stamkos signing as a free agent in Toronto in two years time. The media has nothing to report on as Toronto stinks so they just make things up to excite the fan base.

          • While Leafs24/7 may be just “making up a rumour as a fantasy”, kind of like how the Toronto media suggested Stamkos would pull a LeBraun and come to MakeBelief Land.
But to say that tampering DOES NOT EXIST is just as much a fantasy. Remember when Ron MacLean caught Crosby admitting he’d spoken to Iginla? Iginla DID join the Pens. He then chose Boston the next season (probably the only reason he’d snubbed Boston over Pens was due to the Crosby call) which could have been his intended choice in the first place had Syd not called.
Babcock said he’s not willing to negotiate once the season begins. Maybe he’s just wanting some security: Wings sign me and I’ll stay, they don’t then I’ll consider elsewhere (maybe Toronto).
Who knows? Could’ve told his family to prepare to move IF Wings don’t re-sign him by start of camp so they can be prepared. He IS a great coach, and I can’t see Shannahan overlooking him since he’s not a buddy of his. Would be interesting to see what Babcock could accomplish behind the Leafs bench though…

          • @T-Roc,
Who said tampering does not exist?

    • i knew Babcock hadn’t signed an extension with the Red Wings and apparently wasn’t interested in doing so but i hadn’t heard anything about Toronto. i would think he could have his pick of available jobs as he would be the top coach without a job.

      • Who says that Babcock has no Interest in resigning with Detroit, Babcock has already said that he wont sign an extension until Holland signs his first. both Holland and Babcock are currently on vacation that’s why there has’nt been any contract talks but there suppose to meet together here shortly. Leafs are a joke there is no way that Babcock goes to Toronto.

    • I would seriously doubt that Babcock will be coaching the Leafs, First off Babcock and Shanahan don’t see eye to eye. And if Babacock should decide to leave the Wings they’re pretty much saying that he will take the University of Michigan job when Red Berenson retires. I just don’t see Babcock wanting to go to the Leafs He will stay in Detroit before going to Toronto.

  4. Yes I forgot to mention he said the deal is $5M per season.

    • This assistant coach knows an awful lot, You think he can get me this weeks lotto #’s?

      • hahahaha, nicely done sir!

  5. I spoke to an ex player who said Sydney Crosby is coming to the Red Wings to be with Babcock. Totally kidding but it’s the same thing that leafs24/7 said.

    Who was this assistant coach?

    totally calling BS

    • +1

      • +2

    • It must be true, I read it on the Internet…..Bon Jour!

  6. So does Babcock to the leafs get an E6 or an E7? LOL

Typical leafs fan; the best player available is going to come to the leafs! I guess now that none of the good players are going to the leafs, fans are saying the coaches are!

    Bad rumour is bad.

    • Yes, I’m sure you have more inside information then an assistant coach in the NHL. Believe it or don’t I don’t really care. I’m just repeating what he said. “the worst kept secret”.

    • This story would have been more believable if it started with “a little birdy told me………”

    • And when was the last time you saw a player give the Leafs the hometown discount, either to come to Toronto or stay with the Leafs? Great hockey town, but not a preferred destination for all players – ask Josh Gorges.

  7. Riemer has been coached and I’m sure there is a private understanding between Riemer and the Maple Leafs if they can move him for a deal that makes sense they will. For now he has to play nice in the sandbox. Truth is the Leafs tried to move him last year and all spring and summer. No takers. It is NOT a goaltenders market. Could they use him in Winnipeg of course. Would he be the #1? YES Is he an upgrade? Yes. But the Jets are not giving the Leafs a package of value. Give it until December before the Christmas shut down. If Pavleic is struggling the Jets will make a strong pitch for Riemer and be more willing to give the Leafs what they want.

    • I am not sure really depends on how the year starts, but I could see Randy going before Reimer.

    • There is nothing private about it. Nonis publicly said there was no deal that was worth making for Reimer, but will continue to do what’s best for both the team and Reims.
As for Reimer being an upgrade to Pavelec, well I think they are about the same to be honest.

  8. While Leafs24/7 may be just “making up a rumour as a fantasy”, it seems like Babcock may in fact want the change of scenery… Kind of like how the Toronto media suggested Stamkos would pull a LeBraun and come to MakeBelief Land.

  9. Ask yourself why would I make up a rumour that I spoke to an assistant coach who told me this story. What do I have to gain from it other then a bunch of ridicule from people on this site.

I thought you guys would be interested to hear this rumour being bantered about but obviously not.

Whether or not this coach is right about what he has been hearing is the question not whether I made up a story about speaking to him. You guys make it sound like I spoke directly to God himself.

    • The guy was giving you his opinion, not supported by fact. Years back, Ryan Miller was supposedly guaranteed to the Red wings when he become a UFA, a “book it” deal. Miller turned around and resigned long term with Buffalo. Is it likely Babcock will consider Toronto? Yes, he will consider the Leafs but he has a host of other options, should he consider those options. I do not see the Leafs as the clear front runners for his services, is he truly becomes free.

    • I appreciate it. I think we shouldn’t jump on people on a rumor site. I like the rumors. By jumping on people that may or may not have inside information we will stop others from posting inside info that may have it. Reality is we won’t know for some time. If its true you guys will look dumb for jumping on him. If its not true then let the ridicule begin.
      Just my 2 cents.
Keep up the good comments. Sometimes they are as good as the articles :)

  10. Sounds like that coach is one hell of a fisherman…hook, line and sinker.
