Is there any progress in the contract standoff between the Blue Jackets and Ryan Johansen? Could the Stars pursue Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau?

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Michael Arace is concerned over the possibility the contract standoff between the Blue Jackets and Ryan Johansen could stretch into training camp or even the start of the season. Arace worries it could hurt the club’s performance and make Johansen the target of fan unhappiness.

Could the Stars pursue Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau?

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It could also give rise to trade or offer sheet rumors. A Nashville pundit has suggested the Predators attempt to sign Johansen to an offer sheet. While I doubt that happens, it’s possible another club could consider it. I daresay the Jackets will get some phone calls from rival clubs expressing interest in the young center if he’s still unsigned through training camp or the start of the season.

THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika addressed a reader’s question about the possibility of the Stars attempting to acquire Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau. Heika doubts there will be any trade action between the two clubs, noting the Stars addition of Jason Spezza means there’s no room for Thornton in their lineup. He also notes Thornton and Marleau have no-movement clauses and no intention of waiving them.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Stars made their big moves by trading for Spezza and signing Ales Hemsky. If the Sharks do shop Thornton and/or Marleau, the Stars won’t be part of the bidding.
