Latest on the Blue Jackets, Wild, Red Wings and Canadiens.

It’s only a matter of time until the Blue Jackets move Jeff Carter, Wild fans shouldn’t expect their team to land Zach Parise at the trade deadline, Red Wings GM Ken Holland keeping an eye on the trade market, and it’s time for the Canadiens to go into “sell” mode.

COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Michael Arace reports it’s only a matter of time until the Blue Jackets trade center Jeff Carter, claiming the “worst kept secret in the NHL” is Carter will be moved by the trade deadline, though he has not publicly demanded a trade and the Blue Jackets have made no proclamation the center is available.

CALGARY SUN: Eric Francis reports Carter’s agent said his client doesn’t have a ‘no-trade’ clause, as it was nullified when he was dealt to the Blue Jackets by the Flyers last summer. It was supposed to take effect on July 1st, 2012, but because Carter was dealt  before his 27th birthday (the age of eligibility for UFA status), the clause “didn’t travel” with Carter.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The lack of a “no-trade” clause means the Blue Jackets won’t have to worry about trying to move him before July 1st. That means if they don’t find a deal to their liking by the February 27th trade deadline, or at the June entry draft, they can take their time and shop for a deal after July 1st, with the ability to send him to any team without Carter’s permission.

Could Parise go Wild this summer?

STARTRIBUNE.COM: Michael Russo reports Minnesota Wild fans shouldn’t get their hopes up expecting their club to land New Jersey Devils captain Zach Parise at the trade deadline, suggesting the best opportunity for the Wild to get him is if Parise becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Even then, Wild fans shouldn’t assume it’s a done deal, as Parise has suggested he’d want to play for a Cup contender, something the Wild haven’t been this season, and don’t appear close to becoming anytime soon.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: Helene St. James reports Red Wings GM Ken Holland has had some trade talks with teams, but said he likes the current makeup of his team, which should dispel speculation he might shop pending UFAs like Brad Stuart.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I still expect Holland will make a move or two at the deadline, likely to bolster his depth at forward, but it’s obvious he’s not feeling any pressure to make a deal.

RDS.CA: Luc Gelina believes this miserable week for the Canadiens (losers of three straight games since the All-Star break, dropping the Habs into dead last in the Eastern Conference) should convince GM Pierre Gauthier his team’s playoff hopes are dashed, and it’s time to go into “sell” mode by the trade deadline. Pending UFAs Travis Moen, Hal Gill, Chris Campoli and Andrei Kostitsyn could be trade bait in the coming weeks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stick a fork in the Canadiens, they’re done. Time to ship out those veterans you have no intention of re-signing. Just don’t get stupid and shop quality players like Carey Price, P.K Subban, Tomas Plekanec, Max Pacioretty, David Desharnais, Josh Gorges,  Erik Cole, and Lars Eller, or promising young ones like Louis Leblanc, Alexei Emelin and Raphael Dial. Those are the guys around which to rebuild. Everyone else (yes, even Brian Gionta) should be available.

  1. The lack of the NTC makes Carter a lot more appealing for other teams. Should be interested where he lands. Parise won’t be going anywhere until free agency.

Montreal needs to sell, sell, sell. They are the biggest joke in the league right now. Too bad for such a historic and well known franchise. If this isn’t the end PG… Who knows what will be. Gomez was a bad deal, Kaberle was a bad deal and jury is still out for Cammy and Bouque (Reflex trade).

  2. think the leafs might pick up kaberle for a playoff run? can always use a healthy defenceman!

  3. The only place Carter can go is UP. It’s not like the Blue jackets can trade him to any place worse than Columbus right now. He’s got a real gem of a contract, I forsee the Islanders landing Carter for a late season playoff push, just sneaking in like the oilers in ’06. With Carter carrying them into the second round. Only to suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Florida Panthers

  4. The entire Montreal Canadiens’s organization and its fans are a joke – which pains me to say because I am from Montreal. The team seems to be run by the french media in the city. They actually have the power to influence fans’ opinions to the point where having a coach that speaks french is more important to them than having the most qualified person in the position that would increase their chances of winning. And for what? Just so the french press and media can get their soundbites in french so Habs fans can at least understand why the team is losing. lol

The good news is that I’m a Red Wings fan, and I think Detroit will be looking to add a veteran backup goaltender now that Jimmy Howard is out with broken finger. Nabakov would seem the likely candidate – especially considering that they once held his rights (but lost him to the Isles through waivers). I think Ken Holland must be looking at Vancouver and St. Louis and feeling the pressure to match them in terms of goaltending strength in that position. I just hope that he doesn’t overpay to acquire one, as I would also like to see him add some depth up front.

Whatever happens, I suspect that it will happen sooner rather than later, and I think that it will be Toronto’s Brian Burke that starts the ball rolling.

  5. love how his ntc doesnt kick in. could you imagine him on the islanders just to prop up their salary cap hahaha

  6. Ryan are you braindead or just not a leafs fan?

Why would the leafs want kabbi back?
We dont need defence like omg we have 2 better players then kabbie sitting in the press box every night..When we traded kabbie to boston he was suppose to help their pp unit and as soon as he stepped in their pp unit bottomed out..Hence as to why he was sent to caroline..He went there for the same reasons,to help their pp unit and get them into the zone..How did that work out for them? He is now on his 3rd team in a year and they dont want him after seeing how he plays 90% of the time..He is slow and soft now so HELL NO we dont want him back, not even for a used bagged of pucks and jock straps..

  7. I watched the Det/Edm game last night where Ken Holland and Steve Tambellini were deep in conversation for about 2 hours, maybe longer. Could Khabiboulin have been the topic of conversation?

  8. Ivan_mtl: do not get confused by a few blow hards in the French media and a few more politicians. Ask the real fans and they do not care obout language as they do about results. They got, what, 150 yahoos out to shout at RC? How many paid to see the team play? remember Saku Koivu? Remember the 4 minute standing ovation he got when he return to Montreal a year after he left? Or Halak this year? Those are the real fans of the Habs in this city.

  9. Interesting about Detroit and Edmonton. I could definitely see them making a deal whether it by Khabby, Smyth, or Hemsky. I’m getting tired of speculating though, let’s see a trade already!

  10. Even more props to most Montreal fans, always seeing them give cheers to Lemieux whenever he played there. Or just flat out showing appreciation for good plays and players. Passionate and knowledgeable fans ( the good ones and bad ones, lol ).

  11. Ryan goto the other Trade rumors link that was posted today. We’ve heard more than enough about the bloody leafs for today….Unless you leaf fans can discuss another team? I know eh! What a weird concept!

  12. Sure Kaberle was such a stellar player for the Bruins last playoffs..

  13. Moikid, how do you feel about PG trading Halak for Eller, or signing Cole, or drafting Leblanc? Be fair in your assessments.

  14. I’m not sure what I’ve missed.. but Kaberle has played ok for us actually since coming over. No he didn’t spark the PP much.. but 13 points in 21 games and a + 2 isn’t ‘horrible’.

That being said, during the game yesterday, CBC said that the Blues had 3 scouts there looking for defensive help. Not sure if they were looking at both teams or just the Habs or what. Be interesting to see if anything comes of it.
