The Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers have reached the point in the season where they’re in danger of falling well out of playoff contention. Find out what moves could be in store for both clubs.

Could Kostitsyn be among several Habs shopped at the trade deadline?

RDS.CA: Renaud Lavoie recently wondered if Montreal Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier might engage in a roster “fire sale” in the coming weeks if the club fails to improve, suggesting pending UFAs like Andrei Kostitsyn, Hal Gill, Travis Moen, Mathieu Darche and Chris Campoli could be shopped, as well as defenseman Yannick Weber.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If the Canadiens haven’t improved and gained ground in the standings by mid-month I believe they’ll start seriously entertaining offers for the aforementioned. And no, their recent re-signing of Josh Gorges to a six-year contract isn’t a “sign and trade”.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson reports Oilers GM Steve Tambellini said there’s no trades on the front-burner for his struggling club, but they could call up some players from their farm team. Tambellini suggests trade possibilities could heat up around mid-month. He also said he’s had some talks with Ales Hemsky’s camp about a new contract, but Matheson believes if Hemsky doesn’t improve soon there’s a better chance he’ll be traded.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Rumor bloggers are claiming Hemsky could be traded soon, but I suspect if he’s dealt it’ll be closer to the trade deadline. Tambellini will want to allow enough time to see if Hemsky can improve in the coming weeks, as it could help the Oilers gain ground in the standings. Failing that, it could at least improve his trade value as the trade deadline nears.

Would like to see the Canucks pick up a tough veteran like Gill for the playoffs.

  2. Geoff says:

Hal Gill, Chris Campoli, Yannick Weber definitely need to be traded since I dont see them back next year. I’d like to keep Moen, and while Kostitsyn could still have a spot on this team I’d shop him around to see what you can get.

Move number 1 in the summer though is getting rid of Gomez, I don’t care how but it has to happen.

  3. BizVicious says:

Gomez cannot and will not be traded. The best bet is play him, bury him the minors, or the even harder decision is to buy him out.

NO TEAM, will take his contract./ Matt Stajan has a better chance of being moved, and he’ll never get any takers, why would Gomez?

  4. Murph says:

Since we all know Cunneyworth is a temp until the end of the season, I would expect wholesale changes come end of the season. While Gauthier is looking for head coach candidates, Geoff Molson will be looking for GM Candidates. The new regime, whoever they are, will probably buyout Gomez and try to get some bigger forwards in the lineup. Gill still earns his $ where it really counts ( in the playoffs) but they do need help to get there. Try to offload Kostitsyn to Nashville in return for almost anything…Subban and Plekanec fight today in practice. This team is imploding fast…

I am sure if the Habs are ready, the Balckhawks would love to add both Moen & Gill as playoff experienced vets.

  6. bjray says:

I personally think moen would be a good fit almost theres a big guy with an offensive upside would love to see him in a leafs jersey I could see burke taking a stab at him correct me if im wrong

  7. Dave says:

Does anybody know if Renney speaks french? He would be closer to NY, where all his good buddies are. OH,wait, he’s in Edmonton because not even Montreal wants him.

  8. WHS says:

It would make more sense if the Habs put Gomez through re-entry first. Actual salary is 1/2 over 2 years vs 2/3 over 4 with a significant salary cap discrepancy through years 2 through 4, which happens to front loaded contracts.

  9. HABS_FTW says:

Sadly WHS, Gomez isn’t even worth half his salary so I don’t see any takers there. I’m banking Montreal (and a couple other teams) are hoping for a 1 time penalty free buyout with the next CBA.

  10. Sandy says:

Nobody is going to trade for Gomez… Either they buy him out or bury him in the minors. I know Gauthier did not bring in Gomez… it was Gainey I believe… but they gave up McDonough… did they not? What a waste.

If they do a re-tool (they don’t need a big re-build as they have good pieces in place) that would probably be the best. Get a few extra draft picks for this draft.. which is reported to be deep and skilled… Do they have players in Hamilton they can bring in to fill the vacancies?

I know Guy Boucher speaks French and I am fairly certain if he asked Steve Yzerman would release him to return there.
