The Capitals have a decision to make with free agent Matt Hendricks, who could be targeted by the New York Rangers.
WASHINGTON POST: Katie Carrera reports the Capitals have a tough decision to make with forward Matt Hendricks, who in the past three seasons has become a tough, hard-working penalty killer and a key part of the lineup. Hendricks hopes to remain with the Capitals but acknowledged the business side of the sport. The Capitals have $6.2 million in available cap space, and their other free agents include Mike Ribeiro, Karl Alzner and Marcus Johansson.
NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks believes the New York Rangers will contact Hendricks if the Capitals fail to re-sign him this summer.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: As I noted in a recent THN.com column, the Capitals could afford to re-sign Alzner, Johansson and Hendricks (who made $825K this season) but doing so will eat up the remainder of their cap space, leaving no money for Ribeiro or his replacement. Hendricks could be an affordable re-signing, though they’d likely have to double his salary to keep him off the UFA market, where he’ll be pursued by clubs seeking his brand of toughness and penalty-killing skills.
